I won't say that the room doesn't have any effect on the sound, but in a very tight mic'd situation like micing a loud guitar amp "very" close to the grill cloth, the room wont affect the sound much. A huge majority of the sound that the mic is picking up is from the source, and very little reflection from the room. But don't be afraid to try anything, no matter how funny it seems. sometimes you accidentally come across a technique that works.
  2. Put the 57 and the 58 on the same amp cabinet. Play with the mic placement untill you get a good sound from both mics, then pan one left and the other one right. That's worked for me when I was on a budget. Come to think of it, I've used that technique when I wasn't on a budget using a 57 and a Beta 57. Don't knock it till you try it. Sometimes you can get good results. Good Luck!
