  • Compression Ratios

I have a question about compression. I use the compression plug in that is standard with cubase vst. I normally use a ratio of 2:1 on vocals and a little bit more on acoustic guitars and bass and drums (around 4), both with a qucik attack and slow release. But what I want to know is what are some rules of thumb as far as compression ratios goes - should I be using more less. If anyone knows of a good article or something on the web that would help - if not I would definatly love to get your input. The music I do is mostly acoustic alternative rock with some distorted electric stuff.

    thanks

4:1 with a fairly quick release will clean up your mix quite nicely.
Long release usually works on ballads where there is less going on. Watch out for "breathing" in quiet passages. I like the dbx 1066 - pretty transparent plus it's clean with a Harmonizer or reverb.
