  • Okay guru's help needed!

Here is what I have and what I am trying to do. I have an old M-box 2 channel that will only work with windows XP. I have my PC with Pentium 4, 2.40 GHZ, 2gb ram, and 2 hard drives and one dedicated to the recording so the software runs on one and it records to the other. I am running pro-tools 6.2 SE I believe and it just gets bogged down and will quit in the middle of recording, even after making suggested changes, etc. Would running a program like reaper be better? What would be less taxing on my system and make it so I could at least record one instrument and maybe two at once? At this point I cannot afford a new PC and would like to be able to record or am I S.O.L. ???

    Help a brutha out!!!

    Thanks,

    Bart

If it hasn't been done in the last year then give a shot to reinstalling the computer's operating system. I have seen many old pieces of crap run a hell of a lot better with a simple reinstall. Another question would be are you just asking too much of the machine? At some point if you run enough tracks and effects almost any computer is gonna run out of steam. Run power hungry effects like reverbs on a buss so you don't have to run one for every track.

If you can get some money together at some point I would suggest the Zoom R16 to anyone who wants a straight forward way to record 16 tracks of audio, 8 at a time with much less trouble than it can sometimes take to force your computer to do these things smoothly.

I have a great PA Allen & Heath mix wizard, great effects, I could always run through that into the zoom as it has direct outs or just record clean and add effects as well or use my pedal board and my DI box straight into the zoom too. I have thought about getting something like that as I could also record 8 tracks live with the direct outs on my Allen & Heath too. Correct?

I have reinstalled the OS and all of the OS for the M-box as well as everything as I wanted to start fresh. Some times it will get through a complete track and sometimes it won't. If it does, it won't do it again until I shut the computer down and restart it, run C-cleaner and make sure everything is cleaned up really well, then it will run another full track. I have tried tweaking all of the settings. I just thought maybe one of the other programs out there may not be such a resource hog.

Try Reaper, it has run well on a 1.5 GHZ with 1 gig of ram for me.

Where is the best place to DL it now? I know it used to be free a long time ago, is it still?

The quick answer is that you have to know how to optimise a working, everyday PC for recording.

Reaper works great! I have it installed, all set up and have made rhythm, bass, and lead tracks and mixed them and it is kind of cool and my PC is still fast and alive...lol!
