It was a 1993 Taylor 810.The owner knew nothing about guitars...he said he paid $1899 for it in 1993 but wanted to get $1000.I just missed out on a great deal....oh well...that's doing it eBay. That's a very, very good price for that guitar. So much stuff on ebay goes for as much or even more than retail that I'm just disgusted even watching those auctions these days! So many boobs who don't even know the true cost of new gear just like to bid and bid away like there's no tomorrow. Really, all you need to do is check the online prices first to know if it's even worth bidding. But your experience just goes to show that sometimes a bargain can be had. The only way to fight back is to get a high speed connection and bid the maximum you are willing to pay as your reserve in the closing seconds. Members Unk Posted November 15, 2003 Members Share Posted November 15, 2003 Whenever I bid on anything through eBay that I REALLY want I always sit there as the auction is closing and time it. I'll place my bid with about 6 seconds to go and most of the time it works out. Also, another good strategy is to email the seller during the auction so that I have his response and actual email address after the auction closes. I'll sometimes send a follow-up email saying congrats on the auction and IF the winner has second thoughts or something to please let me know. I've been contacted post-auction before because of this.I feel your pain though man. Even when I'm fairly confident sometimes there's still the final countdown excitement/anxiety. When it happens that fast you were usually outbid by the reserve. You have no way of knowing the reserve price so unless you manage to bid higher than the previous maximum, you cannot win. This isn't the first time i've ever done that.I send e-mails like that to people on eBay all the time, I even met a scammer on Yahoo chat, told him I lived in Jakarta, Indonesia and I was a 22 year old female dancer (I guessed he lived in Jakarta, and I turned out to be right).He gave me his name,address,and phone number.I actually called for aobut 10 seconds just to see if it was a real number and a guy picked up speaking Indonesian and I started speaking Indonesian and mixing it with French.My mother was from Bali,Indonesia, so I know a little bit of Indonesian, plus I know French.I did a reverse look up and the name matched the number and address.So, I turned it into eBay and e-mailed the jakarta post about him.The guy scammed guitars and I went and asked him if he would close the auction to a 1928 Martin D-28 (lifted off of a japanese website) and I told him I would be sending his money ($10,000) the next day and told him to click on an enclosed link and told him he had to input his info in the boxes on my website and the money would be sent as soon as it is sent to my site.The site was fake, I put in a porn site link and i'm sure he clicked on it and got blasted with a billion pop ups because he said "by the way, that is a link to a porn site".I don't know if the authorities in Jakarta ever caught him, I don't really care, I love eBay....I can find good stuff and do reverse scamming at the same time. The key to success (pricewise) on ebay is to play it cool and let a good guitar pass if you cant get a cheaper price on it. There are so many axes on ebay, it should be no great loss. Members EvilHippy Posted November 16, 2003 Author Members Share Posted November 16, 2003 Well, I do know that guitars can go pretty low on eBay, especially if you wonder across an auction with the name of the guitar spelled wrong on the title, but this is the first time I saw an 810 go for $1,046.I think i'll just get a 310 or something and use either my D-35 or the 310 as a 2nd guitar.Don't know which.I shouldn't really call them beaters, cause' they're great guitars,but my D-35 is already beat up, but if I get a 310 or something like that, it will be in better condition,but the D-35 is worth more.If I was to get a multi thousand dollar santa cruz, it would be a different story....I wonder if anyone uses a Martin D-45,Taylor 910,a Santa Cruz,or an Olsen as a beater for their pre-war Martin D-45. It's the same as an 810 (spruce top, rosewood back and sides) but with dot abalone inlays. It's a late 1990's guitar and pretty much mint except for some slight buckle denting on the back. Fishman piezo/mike blender pickup and sounds like heaven. 1200 bucks with hardshell case. I paid 1650 for it new. I'm saving up for an Epiphone Elite Broadway. I can build all the acoustics I want these days but I can't build an archtop electric.Oh yea and it has an ivory saddle.email me if you are interested. But I heard a news bit on NPR a coupla weeks ago about 'www.esnipe.com'. These guys - for about 1% of the winning bid - will get your bid price in with about 6 seconds remaining. Here's what they say, "eSnipe gives you the power to effectively manage and win eBay auctions by placing bids for you during the last few seconds of an auction - a practice commonly know as "sniping." With eSnipe bidding for you, you can mask your interest in an item, protect your privacy, change or cancel bids, and more." Same stuff that lots of folks do on-line, but it's automated. Members EvilHippy Posted November 22, 2003 Author Members Share Posted November 22, 2003 I've seen those services that will bid for you, but i've never heard of eSnipe.I will definately have to get them to help me out the next time I seriously look at an item like the 810 I lost.Oh, I almost forgot to mention, I got an original Woodstock '69 print....the one with the dove on the guitar that has "3 days of peace and music" on it.It was also signed by the artist and it was framed, it also came with soil from the exact spot the main stage was located at in Woodstock '69,photos of the crowd (huge crowd) and other pics,and all 3 tickets(one of each day of Woodstock) I got it off of ebay for $200 bucks.Comes with a COA and letters....pretty cool....i've been looking for some tye dye Grateful Dead shirts, perticularly the one of Jerry Garcia with his birth date and death date outlined by the stars while playing guitar.I love that shirt....I can't remember what site it was on.Anywho, i'm off to look for some anti-political hippy-ish bumper stickers on http://www.northernsun.com .They have some neat stuff.The shirts kinda suck, but their bumper stickers are the best.
