Acoustic testing?

I've been watching a guy named Dave Jones on Youtube, pretty good video lessons, but he's got me curious about something. He keeps mentioning tests and "levels", evidently some sort of grading system for guitar players. Is this strictly an English thing(he's from the U.K.)or is there an U.S. equivalent? What's the point, for measuring progress or a way of weeding out job applicants?

It's a UK/Eire guitarist's pisssing contest that is supposed to give the teachers a stable and predictable income and to separate us hobbyists from the "real profressionals".

It's called "playing" the guitar. If there's an exam involved then why not just suck ALL the fun out of it? :twak:
