Tom Jones album branded 'sick joke'Posted Mon 5 Jul 2010 9:32 BST by News Editor in Pop Gossip Tom Jones' new album has been branded a 'sick joke' by a record company boss. According to reports, Island Records vice-president David Sharpe is appalled by the veteran singer's new religious direction on forthcoming album 'Praise & Blame', due out later this month. "I have just listened to the album in its entirety and want to know if this is some sick joke????," he wrote in a blistering email to staff at the company. "We did not invest a fortune in an established artist for him to deliver 12 tracks from the common book of prayer. Having lured him from EMI, the deal was that you would deliver a record of upbeat tracks along the lines of 'Sex Bomb' and 'Mama Told Me'. "As venerable and interesting as Tom's story is, this is not what was agreed and certainly not what we paid for." Jones is said to have been left 'stunned' by the comments. Members Fendouglas
Well it has, at least, a tenuous connection to music - albeit Tom Jones!
Members Oldskool Texas
My thoughts: Being of Welsh descent, I certainly respect Mr. Jones' accomplishments. But save for a brief resurgence of nostalgic interest upon the release of 1994's The Lead and How to Swing It, nobody in this country has given a rat's ass about him or his music since 1971. This recent dust-up (which I've only heard of here) is no exception.

Members boxorox
Not fond of his genre, don't own any of his recordings. But he's a great voice and an incredible performer. He can record what he damn well pleases. Some pop artists have tried , with greater (Elvis, George Harrison) and lesser (Dion, Cat Stevens, Sam the Sham) success to express a spiritual side brought about by life changes that impact them deeply. It's always an attempt to genuinely communicate their feelngs more direcly and intimatly to their audiance. I have to respect the artist for following his muse with honesty integrity. And if it bombs, we still have "Delilah".

Members guildfire
I thought Tom was basically a Vegas act these days. Could be wrong. He has a strong voice (or did back in the day).
Members Etienne Rambert
I think he's had a great career and "Sex Bomb" was brilliant. It was geezer-Rock at its finest, AFAIC. I'll take it over any geezers du jour reunion tour I've heard about. Singing religious songs might be a legal issue for the producer to sue over. Most of the time, they nail stuff like this down in the contract. Duh! But Jones' comes from Wales. I think they sing religious songs in Wales. He's steeped himself in American Country and R&B. I know they sing religious songs in those styles. The producer should have written a tighter contract. Case closed AFAIC.

Just guessing but, Id prob prefer the Tom Jones gospel over the thrown panty material, but thats just me. The gospel material was some of Elvis' best stuff IMO.
