The cover should provide an extra layer of shielding against noise pickup, but most humbuckers don't need it. The covers are basically decorative and can usually be removed. Phil O'Keefe Posted March 16, 2018 Share Posted March 16, 2018 It won't change the pickup's impedance to remove the cover, although it could theoretically have a slight impact on shielding as Mr.Grumpy noted, and the tone can get a little bit brighter without the covers in place. If you don't like it, you can always reinstall the cover. I don't want to do that. I think i'll use the air classic a lot the coming months. I bought it mainly to achieve the van halen sound on the Balance album coz I believe that's the pickup he used then. he switched from the tone zone to the air classic.
