Members 1001gear
Interesting rhythmic licks but pretty bland. Also Mike Douglas was a pretty good singer and that's from the day when network show bands were an elite bunch. Frank Zappa would've amounted to just another spot somebody booked. Members Chordite
Yeah the first thing I noticed was those upstrokes like the one at 0:55 I couldn't work out why an everyday move would be so noticeable,( in a positive way)
Members humbuckerstrat
Wow, it appeared that Frank was doing tapping in '76.
Members 1001gear
Snuffed the reason out of my response. I'm not the central scrutinizer. Just old enough to remember Mike Douglass and show bands.
Members badpenguin
He wasn't the first at tapping back then. You had tappers in the 50's, but the earliest "rock" tapping to my knowledge was Genesis from about the 72/73 range.
Members Grant Harding
Needs a splash of reverb on the guitar. I like the way he operated and his composition skills but his guitar playing never jumped right up and grabbed my meat.

Members Mr.Grumpy
Four and a half minutes of avant-garde rock music, on AFTERNOON TEEVEE?!?! I didn't appreciate the 70s enough when I was living in them. Also, I did not know that Black Napkins is a waltz.

Members Etienne Rambert
I would have liked a space where it was just the back-up band. They were fantastic players.Extended lead solos - even by Zappa don't much interest me. What that horn section was doing had my interest for sure. Members GAS Man
Thanks for pointing that out. I would have missed that otherwise. That's the kind of thing that makes me have some love for Frank Z. He'd do so many of those non-conventional things, flying in the face of the norm. Members GAS Man
I was never a huge fan, but Frank was sure an iconic image of the late '60s, very much a cultural icon. I was 12 in '69 and that image was in many of the "cool shops" of the day, and although I never found that image to be pleasant, it was certainly one that was likely to make an impact, pushing the envelope of "taste". I once "worked" one of his concerts at the Convention Center in Spokane WA in the late 70s. Since I was a "crowd control" employee, I wasn't as focused to his music as I would now wish I was, but I realized that his music was a bit to unconventional for the majority of the crowd. It was the only concert (besides Elvis) where the performer did not do an encore. I just felt he thought he was mostly playing to musical peasants and wanted to split that scene. My interest in his music has remained largely with his more "accessible" tunes. Love "The Deadly Yellow Snow", and "Joe's Garage" should be up there with "American Pie". I also love this story about Steve Vai's first audition for Frank Zappa.

Members Subreel
Frank Zappa is always someone I feel like I should be more into than I am. Where's a good starting point? An album or live performance? One of my favourite comedians (Adam Buxton) talks about Zappa a lot and I feel like I should know what he's talking about... Frank left this world in 1993 so there are no live performances. I liked the album " Bongo Fury " back in the day,but I'm no expert on the subject
