Let me add one additional trick. If you know something in open A you can move it up one string (from the floor) and play it in E. In other words, everything on the first string moves to the second, second to third, etc. You loose the 6th string but its commonly just a bass drone in these open tunings. This works better for some songs than others but can really broaden your options.

 

Being mostly an acoustic player I keep at least one guitar (usually my tri cone and weissenborn) in open D which is the same as E only down two semi tones (open E would destroy an acoustic). I play about half of my stuff with a slide, about half fretted and the other half a combination. So many good open D/E songs - Little Martha, Dust My Broom, Dark was the Night, Paris Texas,........
