Moderators Ratae Corieltauvorum Posted April 21, 2016 Moderators Share Posted April 21, 2016 OK, Yes I know a 20 year old guitar vs a brand new out the box guitar with a set of 57 Classics in it and only 100GBP difference. Here's my dilemma, the Emperor Regent has an early Kent Armstrong pickup, lovely condition, cased and of course made by those meisters at Peerless, and they do make a damn good guitar. Here's the shallow bit, it's a burst, and I'm quite desperate to not have any more Bursts, I love me transparent red. - 480GBP The Epi 137 Premium, Gibson USA 57 Classics, wine red, aged"lacquer" finish....not sure what that is. - 567GBP

Members Mikeo
I have a couple of things I could play jazz on if I played jazz. A Godin 5th Ave, a ES 135, and ES 335, could all work.
Members wasgtrjones
Peerless makes nice guitars. Not sure about the new one, I haven't had any of those in my hands. But I'm with you, against the burst, and I personally have never been able to get along with a one-pickup guitar. I've tried, but it doesn't work. If you can play them both, that's your answer. If you can't pick the one (used one?) that you can re-sell with the least damage.
Moderators Ratae Corieltauvorum Posted April 21, 2016 Author Moderators Share Posted April 21, 2016 I have a couple of things I could play jazz on if I played jazz. A Godin 5th Ave, a ES 135, and ES 335, could all work. Well truth be told I have a number of guitars that would fill any jazz shaped holes as well, but I do do love a single neck pickup for quiet evening late nigh noodling, and when I get my lazy fat arse into gear I have a 1958 ES-125 that needs a neck set, new fretboard and frets and then I'll just fill it out with new pots and a Seymour Duncan neck dogear, so we're definitely not in the "need" category here. If that Emperor Regent was in transparent red the money would be spent already, and ya know, I'm way more a fan of the L5 style cutaway, and I don't really like the Florentine cutaway. If I get be sure that this was as transparent and aged looking as it appears here, a Joe Pass would be my choice.

Members WRGKMC
I voted for the new one, mainly because it has more versatility and because it is new.I'm not a fan of those add on pickups either. The placement on the end of the fret board is not ideal for capturing the high E node and can have issues with some notes being louder then others. The other thing about age is I haven't had the best experiences with the new Epi's My dot began to experience warping after about 10 years and would be unplayable at this point if I hadn't arrested the problem. I know its only budget guitar costing $300 at the time, but poor quality construction was the cause. Its no reflection on other epis, especially the solid bodies. Its just the new semi and Hollow bodies aren't the same quality instruments they made during the 60's so I don't expect a long lifespan out of them. I do like the Frequensator tailpiece on the regent. I had that on my 67 Riviera and it does some wonderful things for the string tension. If I were going to look to buy a Jazz guitar I'd give the Ibanez Artcore or Artstar lines a serious look. I never thought of Ibanez much for making a good Semi/Hollow till a buddy of mine bought one. I got a chance to play one and inspect its build and was quite impressed with its quality. The pickups had a great tone to them too, much better then the budget pickups Epiphone uses. Members onelife
Does the Emperor have a solid top? I'm guessing that it does because it has a floating pickup and controls. Is the 137 a thinline semi solid or is it fat and hollow? (it looks more like a 175 to me) Those factors would be more important to me than the color. If you really don't like the sunburst you can alwys do what John Lennon did to his Epiphone Casino.

Phil O'Keefe
They can have my Peerless-built Casino when they pry it from my cold, dead hands. Go with the Emperor. If the color really bugs you that much, have it refinished.
Members onelife
I played a nice Casino in a guitar shop last year. As a longtime 335 player, I found it to be quite a different beast. The neck joining the body at the 16th fret rather than the 18th gave it a more solid feel and the hollow body gave it a nice snappy acoustic sound. I plugged it into one of the new Supro amps that was in the shop but never got it up loud enough to investigate feedback. I idon't need another guitar but I would certainly consider one of those or an ES-330 if the opportunity presents itself. I'd probably go with Chris Kinman's noiseless version of the P90 if I did get one just because of the one thing I don't like about P90s.

Members badpenguin
It's a no brainer, the Peerless. Wear some rose colored glasses, and the finish won't be an issue.
Moderators Ratae Corieltauvorum Posted April 22, 2016 Author Moderators Share Posted April 22, 2016 I have a Gretsch Tenny Rose, that one could play jazz on. I like that one alot. I will have a Gretsch, but it's in the future, and it'll be a birth year guitar, ie 1964, unless I can find a decent cherry red 64 ES-
Moderators Ratae Corieltauvorum Posted April 22, 2016 Author Moderators Share Posted April 22, 2016 OK, I've come up with THE compromise. The Emperor Regent will be arriving over the coming week and my players ES-125 will be restored, with some fancy details and a very thin cherry finish, Macassar fretboard and stainless frets
Moderators Ratae Corieltauvorum Posted April 25, 2016 Author Moderators Share Posted April 25, 2016 I'm so full of **************** sometimes:idk: Finger on the trigger, as I very often am in bed at night with the iPad mini, sort of let the trigger finger drift a bit, as I hadn't searched for a birth year guitar for a good few months, and am now the owner of a 1964 Hofner Senator thinline:o. I'll try and get me fat ass to post a NGD when it arrives, but by way of an indication, here it is in a bed scenario, and no, the carved headboard, bedside lamp, and {censored} artsy picture did not sway me, but at least I know I have a guitar that's comfy in a bed

Members badpenguin
not on an old Jazz box... While I have one guitar with a single neck pickup, Alden Mayfair, on an old hollwbody, it's totally acceptable. And that's just pretty Rat!
