Moderators Ratae Corieltauvorum Posted November 24, 2015 Moderators Share Posted November 24, 2015 There's a variety of buying options, but this is quite common: EMG 81 85 Set Active Solderless Humbucker Pickups BlackIN EACH BOX: EMG'S EXCLUSIVE SOLDERLESS INSTALL SYSTEM SPLIT SHAFT VOLUME/TONE CONTROL SET OUTPUT JACK BATTERY CLIP SET, SCREWS & SPRINGS. Moderators Ratae Corieltauvorum Posted November 24, 2015 Moderators Share Posted November 24, 2015 Never been a fan, although Doc Jefferey had some good things to say about them;)
Members Grant Harding
I'm guessing that the pot included with the set has been chosen for the pickup. 25k seems weird. Have you got one and not happy or thinking of buying one?
Members Mr.Grumpy
... 25k seems weird. EMG 81s and 85s are active pickups, the amp/buffer is actually encapsulated inside the pickup. A normal volume control wouldn't work very well with an active pickup because their output impedance is lower.
Members GAS Man
I've never been much of a fan either, but then I'm more of a clean to blues-rock kind of guy. For higher gain stuff, the clean cut is a nice compliment to saturated tones. I bought a used MIJ "The Eclipse" years ago based on an article entitled "Posh Planks". But when I got it home I found the dual 81s to be more limited in their genre than that article had stated, like really, "play country" with EMG 81s? But the 85 is more in my bluesy friendly territory. But I'm more of a PAF style fan boy. They do have their niche though.

Members mbengs1
sorry just logged on to HC now after a week. I have an emg 81 and 85 in one guitar that i bought on ebay. i'm thinking of transferring the emg's pickups to another guitar that could use nice pickups.maybe an ibanez S. i'm just wondering if i'll need new pots and if the brand new emg's came with pots, jack, pickup selector etc.
Moderators Ratae Corieltauvorum Posted November 26, 2015 Moderators Share Posted November 26, 2015 If you were to swap the EMGs from the current guitar to the S series Ibanez, then transfer the pots too, as if you intend to fit the guitar that currently has EMGs with passive, they'll need different componentry anyway
