Members mbengs1
steve vai claims its him. the jems came out in 1987. but malmsteen started having his signature strat made in '86. it's not the les paul. that isn't technically a signature model guitar,
Members badpenguin
Yes it is. It's called the Les Paul for a reason. he designed it, he endorsed it, and it's his name on it.
Members sammyreynolds01
badpenguin is correct. The Les Paul was his signature guitar.
Members Preacher
badpenguin and sammyreynolds01 are correct, Les Paul has his signature printed on the headstock of his signature guitar.

Members Chordite
You are wrong on the Les Paul for one simple reason:"Signature" guitars are a modeling of an artists departure from a standard model
Members mbengs1
i don't think its fair to consider the les paul a signature guitar because it's a standard in the industry. it's like the fender stratocaster. its one of the most popular guitars in history. i'd consider the les paul an industry standard rather than a signature series guitar. Members badpenguin
It's HIS signature on it, but if you really want to be anal, then the Les paul Custom. Better? Or if that doesn't float, then the Gretch Chet Atkins. Or the Gibson Chet Atkins. You also have the Trini Lopez from Gibson. I know you worship Vai, but he's NOT the first, or the longest. Members badpenguin
If I remember right, BB had a 355, not a 330.

Members gardo
Even if you do forget Les Paul and only look at Ibanez ,they have been making George Benson guitars for over thirty years
Members Notes_Norton
I go with Les Paul
Members AlamoJoe
Actually it was a 355 I think..I was referring to the 330 series in general not specifically a 330...My Bad..
Members Chordite
For reasons I explained above. The Les Paul is NOT a signature model!!! Jeez, Fender has his name on Strats They are not "Leo Fender signature" models either.Nor is the Crown Victoria a Ford 'signature' model.
Members badpenguin
And thinking about it, I don't think the JEM is a Vai signature guitar. I don't remember his name being on it on any of the production models, especially from 87. It may be his signature guitar, but I don't believe it's a signature guitar. Unlike the JS series, which was the Radius that they gave to Joe.
Members Voltan
Honestly it isn't about what you think or feel. The definition stands as such, if you don't like it, write a new one, submit it to Wikipedia and wait for your results. Thanks,

Jeez, Fender has his name on Strats They are not "Leo Fender signature" models either. Nor is the Crown Victoria a Ford 'signature' model. Leo Fender was the maker, that is why "Fender" aren't sigs; Gibson made the "Les Paul" as Les Paul's signature model of Gibson electric guitars designed to his specs. Just because it became so popular that they divided it up into other "sig" models does not mean it was not a signature model of Gibson to begin with. Members Chordite
Wrong! It was Les Paul's ORIGINAL DESIGN not a customization of an existing guitar in the Gibson range.
Members Preacher
Ha, semantics; thus "does not mean it was not a signature model of Gibson to begin with. "
Members gardo
So Les Paul was smart enough to create a whole new design concept this is way over the top. I guess you prefer to see someone warm over an old design and put his name on it
Members Chordite
Yes It is a DESIGNER model Not Signature model. Signature models are when an artist MODIFIES a design and the factory replicates those mods. So a "Slash" Signature Gibson Les Paul would be a signature model. PS We could do this all day but we ain't gonna
Members sammyreynolds01
No the JEM is Vai's signature guitar. That guitar was designed to his specifications and was the guitar that inspired the RG series. So yes the JEM is Vai's signature.
Members Bucksstudent
It's amazing how this guy's threads always generate the dumbest arguments that go on for pages and pages. Who cares? I've never owned a signature model, but Les Paul's name is indeed on my Epiphone Custom. Does that make it a signature guitar? I don't care. It's my guitar.
