Have you tried ReRanch? http://www.reranch.com/

They definitely know their stuff and from what I understand they are decent people to deal with if you need to contact them. I haven't bought from them because I can buy that stuff locally.

Heritage red may be close to what you're looking for. http://reranchstore.stores.yahoo.net/gibcherred.html $15 is a decent price for the spray cans too. You'll just have to check the shipping costs.

Not allot of places sell the semitransparent in cans. Most pro shops mix their own and use sprayers which brings the cost way down.

Give StewMac a call - I've used their amber tinted nitro rattle can and seen acceptable finishes with the red. I think they ship across the pond

However I prefer to mix my own - here is nitro with StewMac's red dye added. A touch of amber for the center, then fade to cherry red

Be advised that staining and using colored finish are two entirely different things and will give totally different results. Also, in my humble opinion, transparent or semi opaque finish are very hard to do with rattle cans - they are really hard to control. By the time you buy enough rattle cans to finish a guitar (probably four) you've got a hundred bucks (you can convert to Pounds) invested and may or may not be happy with the finish (you'll need a can of primer, one or two of the color and at least one of clear).

For that reason I long ago started using a small HPLV gun and compressor and either nitro or waterborn lacquer (the latter is not toxic, not explosive and can be shipped anywhere). I use nitro if I want a really vintage finish or on my very best guitars, but most of the time I shoot the water born (you can tint either one).

If you want to match a factory finish color, Dan Earlewines book Guitar Finishing Step by Step has color chips and the recipe to match - highly recommended. The book is also a good tutorial on finishing a guitar if you don't already have that experience.

Good luck - finishing and refinishing are two of the hardest things for a home builder

While I've used, and was quite satisfied with their products, ReRanch (or StewMac either, for that matter) is not going to be a viable option for someone living in the UK. You can't ship nitrocellulose lacquer via air, so he's going to have to find someone local in the UK who can ship it to him via ground transportation.

Sorry, but I don't know of any suppliers in the UK who sell good quality nitro at reasonable prices.

Possibilities (note that in the UK nitro is often called "cellulose")

It might also be worth contacting Melvyn Hiscock who wrote the book "Make Your Own Electric Guitar". Hiscock lives in the United Kingdom. In his chapter on finishing he references nitro cellulose lacquer, both in rattle cans and sprayed from a gun, but he doesn't say where to get it in the UK. If the OP wants to PM me I can give him the contact information.

Last idea is to contact any of the great luthiers in that part of the world and ask where they buy their products. I have found the lutherie community very helpful - someone might just sell a small quantity of lacquer.

thanks for your help again chaps .Freeman Keller thank you for the offer ,but it is only for a semi serious project for myself .i butchered two pointy horns off a guitar body to make it more to my liking. the front of the body is a tiger maple effect so that will remain clear . it is the back of the body which is heritage cherry (old sg colour). at the moment i was just looking at covering the the newly cut exposed wood and hope i get a good match if not one can should do the whole back. i will probably buy the lacquer from Northwest guitars ,it just bugged me because it was so expensive for 1 can plus the postage, the shop has made a big deal out of tranporting aerosol cans any body would think it was a nuclear warhead .i couldn`t pester Melvyn Hiscock just because i want to save a couple of quid on one can of lacquer .but thanks all the same.

cheers Knotty,i don`t think any of those colors are right for what i`m wanting and their prices are even higher. this is the colour i`m after.http://www.northwestguitars.co.uk/heritage-cherry-nitrocellulose-lacquer-aerosol-400ml/ . i`ll probs end up getting this one.but i still need to dig a bit deeper locally.

OK, let us know how it comes out. Pictures maybe.

Finishing and refinishing is very hard. I do lots of repairs and I tell people up front that it will be structurally sound but maybe not cosmetically perfect. I try, but I also have to warn folks.

If your guitar is already nitro (and you are sure, there is a very easy test) then nitro is relatively easy to shoot on top and to get to blend in (much easier than these high tech finishes that everyone uses now days). If its not nitro you could have problems too Good luck
