Members kenneyy88
Budget? - Looking to buy online for around $200. Pretty much a beginner but would like to buy the best quality guitar for around $200, that doesn't include $ for an amp. Favorite Artists? - The Strokes, Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Killers, Rage Against The Machine, Incubus, Franz Ferdinand, Taking Back Sunday, All American Rejects. I liked a lot of rock in the early 00s. Not really interested in Metal or harder rock, I like cleaner tones. Preferences? - Body Shape- A standard guitar shape, nothing crazy like a flying V. Location? - I am located in Manhattan in New York City. Thank You for your help.

Members Tall
Well your budget is kind of low. Look at the Squire Strats. Also get out out of Manhattan to buy. It is one of the single worst places to buy a guitar. Head over to Northern NJ or Westchester.
Members Tall
I take back what I said you should be able to score something decent for $200, buying used. Some of these even come with a small practice amp. I would recommend a bag or case to keep it in. These links will probably expire shortly but here are a few I found on the NYC Craigslist: http://newyork.craigslist.org/que/msg/4814611697.html http://newyork.craigslist.org/mnh/msg/4814154563.html http://newyork.craigslist.org/brk/msg/4807153063.html

Members DeepEnd
. . . Looking to buy online for around $200. . . . . . . Preferences? - Body Shape- A standard guitar shape, nothing crazy like a flying V. . . . What do you consider a "standard guitar shape"? A Les Paul? A Stratocaster? I'd seriously avoid buying a first guitar online. Save up a few more bucks and buy locally. Be careful buying used unless you know what you're looking for or you can bring a friend who knows guitars. You could easily end up with someone else's problem. A Squier or Epiphone should be suitable. Given your tastes, I'd lean toward a Squier Strat but play a few guitars and see what feels and sounds right to you. I'd also budget for a "setup." It will make whatever guitar you do buy easier to play.
Members slvrsrpnt
The first guitar was made quite some time ago, and chances are it no longer exists grab something that you like the looks of to make you want to play, and have someone int he know make sure it's a decent player......and have fun! Members Wayne2
Red Hot Chili Peppers - you want the Stratocaster and an amplifier capable of sounding Marshally if you want to sound something like Frusciante. For that budget get a Squier strat and a Champion or Mustang amp.
Members sammyreynolds01
squiers are good. the epiphone is a nice guitar just make sure you get the one without the floyd for a first guitar.
Members kenneyy88
I'm taking a look at the Squier Standard Strat from these two shops. I think the only difference is the fretboard. Which of the fretboards: Rosewood or Maple fits the sounds of the bands I like?. http://www.samash.com/squier-standard-strat-electric-guitar-fsqstrat?errorViewName=ProductDisplayErrorView&urlLangId=-1&urlRequestType=Base http://www.guitarcenter.com/Squier-Standard-Stratocaster-Electric-Guitar-101115525-i1146338.gc

There are two of then for sale for $65 each on my local CL right now. A perfectly fine guitar for you. Take the money you save buying used and get it setup well at a local shop. Or for about $250 you could get a used Fender MIM strat on eBay.
