Members AJ6stringsting Posted November 30, 2014 Members Share Posted November 30, 2014 The old Bill Lawrence pickups from the late 1970's and pre-1984 are the best, especially the R-500,L-500, XL-500, L-280 and L-250. After 1984, the new ones just didn't have the dynamics of the old ones, it was pretty much hit and miss.As for the Steve's Special, it a great pick up too, it's got scooped mids, great for Thrash, Speed Metal or Prog Metal. Best pickups I've ever used bar none. If I was outfitting a double humbucker guitar for versatility for everything from high gain metal to country and jazz the L500s would be my choice.
