Members chimi
Hey guys, I know there are a lot of fakes out there. I'm about to pull the trigger on an Epi Slash model (the tobacco burst) what are some things to look out for to make sure i can tell the difference between the real thing and a fake? Thanks
Members stormin1155
My thought is when buying an Asian guitar, ethical issues aside, I'm far more concerned about the quality of the guitar than if it is real or fake. For all I know the fakes and the real Epi's might be made in the same factory by the same people using the same materials.
Members guitarcapo
I didn't know there was any money to be made faking Epiphones.
Members WRGKMC
Unless its a high end EPI, I don't see any profit to be made counterfeiting a budget guitar. If and Epi sells for $300 the builder might make what $100 after shipping. A counterfeit costs the same money to build. They are usually sold cheaper to hook buyers. Are they going to go through all that trouble to make $25~50 or will they target the $1000 Epi? Most of them are made in China or Taiwan and as Stormin says, They may be made in the same factory and being sold under the table.

Members Bucksstudent
I'm wondering why there are Epiphone fakes.
Members GilmourD
I'm wondering why there are Epiphone fakes. Take a guitar that should barely sell for $100 Mark it up to $300 Say "HEY! THIS GUITAR SHOULD SELL FOR $500!" ??? PROFIT!
Members Bucksstudent
Why wouldn't they just make fake Gibsons then?
Members GilmourD
Why wouldn't they just make fake Gibsons then? They do. Same guitars, different headstocks. They've got all the price points covered, just like the real thing! Doug Kauer even found a fake Kauer on one of those Chinese sites. LOL

Members Phil mac 86
“Why would they fake a cheap guitar” it’s comments likes this that are the reason they do lol There are probably just as many fake Epiphones floating out there as Gibson, I’m a luthier and I’ve seen my fair share over the years Also if you have ever done business in China you would understand the people manufacturing these fake guitars don’t see themselves as selling fake guitars. They are just guitar builders and they have realised they can sell more of their cheaply made guitars if they stick epiphone or any other well known brand name on them. Counterfeiting and more broadly the idea of intellectual property and copyrights etc are very much a western concept

Members Emory
'66 Epi Casinos usually aren't cheap. Dude had one for sale on Craigslist here in Bangkok for about $500 with case. Checked negative space around pick guard, patina on knobs, condition of case, etc... as much as I could from photos. Difficult aspect is (to my eye) real Casinos from 66 were not all that consistent regarding pickguard placement, among other things. Passed on photo test, so called to see in person. You guessed it: already sold.
