Epi Sheraton Vs. Washburn HB35

Hi,

Recently, I was at our local guitar shop and I tried out an Epiphone Sheraton guitar and I felt it was pretty good (however, considering I'm a newbie to all of this, don't really know how much that helps). I liked the slimmer neck better than the fatter neck of the Peavey JF-1 I played.

So along with the Sheraton, I'm also considering a Washburn HB-35. I've read great reviews about it on the harmony-central reviews. however, many of those were for the older sycamore top guitars. Has anyone picked up a recent one? And how are the sounds?

In general, there are a few things that I'd like to know about how the two guitars compare as I'm going to go see about the Washburn at another dealer that's about 300 miles away and I don't want to drive that far if the Sheraton would be just as good. So the questions I have are:

*How do the necks compare? (width wise basically; i.e. chunky vs. slim)

*How do the stock pickups compare?

*How do the newer models with the flamed maple sound?

*What other alternatives would I have in the $400-$650 range?

Thanks a bunch!

i was deciding between the two guitars earlier this year, and i went with the sheraton. It to me was a far superior feeling guitar, it felt better than many of the gibson hollowbodies i tried the same day. I prefer the epiphone stock pickups although the washburn is good to. The decision comes down to preferences, try both out. The washburn has its toggle switch positioned differently which i actually prefer to the epiphone but in the end the epiphone feels like a much sturdier guitar.

I would suggest trying them both out and deciding from there

Actually is not the price of the guitar or make, its what feels right in your hands. If your comfortable with one particular guitar then thats the one. Sometimes an over price name guitar can be a P.O.S. Just try as many guitars as you can invest the time and you will find the right one.If the one you pick that feels right is a cheap guitar you can always mod the electronics.:thu:

Im planning to buy the Sheraton II at the end of the month, so here's what I think:

-when I first played the Sheraton I thought it was too muddy, and I thought the Dot or the Casino were better, but I went again to another shop to play it and felt really nice.

-try to play both the Epiphone and the Washburn in a shop with the same amp you have in your house, there you will know how it will sound the full equipment, and its the easiest way of deciding between two guitars, which one you like playing them.

-I never played the Washburn though I heard its really a nice guitar, so if you want to pay a little less go for the Washburn and then change the pups or whatever you want to change.

-Both are nice guitars so you really cant go wrong with one or another, if you have completely decided for one of them.

good luck!

Thanks for the replies guys!

I was wondering if you could tell me how the neck felt comparing between the two models... i.e. thickness wise, and feel wise. As I said before, I've tried the Sheraton and the neck felt fast and thin, which is what I like. I only ask because the guy I was talking to about the Washburn says he'll have to order it for me to try it out. I'm not entirely sure what else he stocks in there but thanks for the tips.

Also, is the pup swap hard to do? and for a decent swap, how much money am I looking at?

Swap is a little more work with semis than solidbodies usually. I find most Epi HB's to not be very inspiring. I love their alnico P90 though. The stock HB35 pickups sound nice!

I don't know about the Washburn, probably a very good guitar. But I think the Sheraton II is the best guitar that Epiphone makes. I bought a Epiphone Lucille used and like it ok, but all of the Sheraton II's that I have tried out at guitar shops I like better. I will probably sell my Lucille one day, and likely replace it with a Sheraton II.

Aren't they built in the same factory out of similar materials?

dcooper, could you measure the necks of one of your dots for me please? The Washburn site lists the HB-35 as a 320mm neck radius and i would like to have something solid that I've handled before to compare it to. Thanks!

Actually..... the necks on 'em are different. My black one has a pretty slim neck. My natural colored one has a thicker neck.

And my Dot Studio has has a really chunky neck..... thicker than the other two.

So...... I'm thinking they may not be consistent with their neck thicknesses...... or maybe..... since the black one is Korean and they had slimmer necks.

I don't know how to measure a neck for radius though.......... :o

Uhhh, you do know that a neck raidus of 320 mm is actually talking about the fretboard radius. It's the curvature on the fretboard and has nothing to do with the thickness or "solidness" of the neck.

tlbonehead, could you do some measurements for me then? namely the width of the fretboard at the fifth fret and the depth at the fifth fret... i mean how thick the neck is at the fifth fret. that would be great if you could and would you say that the neck of an hb35 is comparable to that of the thicker necked dot?

Thanks for the awesome pics! If I could get some measurements that would be great and do you guys know of any demo clips of these two guitars? and what's the difference between the "airy" and "meaty" sounds. Sorry if these are ridiculously stupid questions, this is my first foray into electric guitars. Thanks again!
