Members gorebuc
You should definitely get something in the Gibson/Epiphone camp. Maybe a used Dot with a pickup swap or something.
Members Squier Fat Telecaster
Most likely it will be the Nighthawk. The Trohman Tele is calling me from the Fender camp.

I agree with you in principle, but in fact everytime I've strayed from a Fender-type design to something in the Gibson/Epiphone camp I've not loved it. Perhaps I need to break down someday and actually spend the coin for a "real" Gibson in order to be satisfied...

Perhaps I need to break down someday and actually spend the coin for a "real" Gibson in order to be satisfied... When I eventually did that, I became a Gibson fan for life. I've owned 5-6 Epiphones over the years (Vees, Dots, Les Pauls, Strat-clones) and none of them were ever worth a crap. Then I bought a Joe Bonamassa Studio and it was like night and day compared to the Epiphone stuff.

Members RaVenCAD
I was very tempted by that thing until I found the right deal on a MIM Strat. It's a 25.5" scale, which I like better than the short scale offset stuff Fender usually puts out. I'm ok wth a 24.75" scale, but a 24.0" is too tight for me. The triple humbucker seems neat, too.. Get one, I'd love to see a review on it, cuz I'll probably own one eventually.
Members bsman
I'm sort of in the market for an MIM strat too. I keep reading here about all the "minty $225 MIMs flooding CL in the Bay Area", but even though I look on a daily basis, I see a {censored}load of $350 2000-and-earlier strats, whole buckets-full of $225 Squiers and damn few cheap MIMs aren't either trashed or from back when they were building them from balsa wood and bailing wire.... I think it must be an urban myth -- sort of like all of those supposedly cheap MIA G&Ls that are so prevalent on this board but apparently nowhere in the actual universe... And don't get me started on the MIA standards! It boggles the mind that when one can go to GC any day of the week and pick up an MIA standard for $899 with absolutely no haggling or "deals" (has that ever actually been done???) I see so many 90s MIA standards on CL going for $700 and up!!!!

Members Squier Fat Telecaster
The Vintage Modified Jaguar with dual humbuckers would be a good match for my Vintage Modified Jazzmaster........$275. I really really want the Schecter PT Fastback but they are $550. Way over budget. The Marauder is nice but I already have a Jazzmaster. I want to try the Nighthawk out but no one has them locally So as it stands, either I save some dough and get the Squier Jaguar or for $75 more get the Nighthawk. Then I search youtube and find the new trohman Tele but it's $379, not sure it's worth $100 more than the Jag. That's a set of good humbuckers. Members RaVenCAD
Don't forget about that J. Mascis Squier.. I played one of those and while it isn't the aesthetic I'd go for, it's certainly a fun guitar. bsman, I hear you on those mythical prices. When I was looking for a MIM Strat, I saw several in the $350-400 range, and NADA under $300 except for the beat-to-crap stuff hanging at GC.. Then I finally found one for $300 that was a mint 2010 w/case... I talked dude down to $250..
Members Squier Fat Telecaster
I already have the Vintage Modified Jazzmaster. I need a rockin' humbucker style. Going to check out a Jaguar this weekend at GC.
Members Squier Fat Telecaster
I wonder how the Duncan Designed pickups compare to some Epiphone 57 Classics I have laying around that parts bin?
Members GAS Man
Epiphone Nighthawk That would be my pick. They made the Guitar Player mag pick for top 10 gits under $xxx (can't remember fer sher exactly the price max on their article). I think they look good, they're getting good reviews and with now with Seymour Duncan producing either a '59 or JB in a slant bridge HB design for NHs, you could upgrade the guitar from "fair" to a solid base for "good". I'd get one myself but I already have 3 other Nighthawks. [video=youtube;2nOgNCI4wtQ] I think I'd go for the honeyburst

Members bsman
The nighthawk always reminds me of some of the nightmarish designs Fender came out with in the depths of their CBS thralldom. Members gorebuc
I had a Casino a few year ago and sold it thinking I wanted a Jazzmaster. Never got the funds up to get one of those, played around with a few cheap Fender style guitars to complement my Thinline Tele...finally realized the other "sound" I wanted involved big loud pickups and a set neck. Now I'm back at a Epi semi-hollow. I don't think I'm gonna let this one go, as I was perfectly content with the Tele and Casino for around 2 years before I started logging back onto these forums. However, I agree with some of the others about not being a huge low-end Epiphone fan. Everything I've played from the Chinese factory, while perfectly adequate, feels like a cheaper acoustic to me. My new Korean Riviera, OTOTH is pure I thought about a lower-end Gibson, but this thing feels so much better than the 60s Tribute SG I played a while back--and I just like semi-hollow guitars obviously. A Fender with HBs is still gonna sound like a Fender, IMO. Not quite as big and fat, more lean and aggressive. The HBs in those Vintage Modified Jags are pretty awful as well. Nowhere near the quality of the single-coils in the VM Jazzmaster. And, if its like the Jagmaster, you're gonna have to get a new pickguard or hack yours to put covered HBs in. Just food for thought. I've gone through 9 electric guitars in my relatively short time of playing, and I always come back to having one "Fender" and one "Gibson/Epiphone." Members gorebuc
Agile might be a good option, but be aware that reselling it will be much more difficult than a similar guitar with the Epiphone branding. I know thats not something fun to think about, but, in this economy, and with our fickle tastes, its something to consider.
Members Squier Fat Telecaster
Played the nighthawk. Quality is great. Feels like twice the price. Body shape is the con. Not too comfy sitting. Sounds are nice. Some great ssplit coil tones too. Probably more comfy standing with a fat sstrap. Neck heavy.
