There is just something about that. Especially on bass.

Maybe bass but not guitars. There comes a point when the higher notes, especially on the high E string sound shrill for lack of a better word.

Flatwound bass- I leave 'em on until they break. Guitar-a month or two, depending on how much playing time/tone change.

meh, intonation goes to hell on old strings.

I can really only use them for three months of regular playing. After that they feel like spaghetti and sound like an accordion.

Intonation is the biggest problem, but old strings lose sustain and clarity. There's no mojo, except if you can't afford to replace them.

to each, his/her own. i'll change strings every 3-4 weeks on a guitar i've been playing regularly, and that's even after regularly wiping the strings down after playing with a clean rag. i don't like the feel or sound of older strings. very un-inspiring, IMO.
