Members IRG Posted December 3, 2012 Members Share Posted December 3, 2012 I'm interested in a semi hollow, an affordable one, so maybe the Epi ES 339 Pro. I don't have any to test locally. I've had a Casino in the past, cool guitar, almost seemed too big. I know the 339 is a scaled down version of the 335, but does it feel/seem/look too small? Hard to gauge in pics sometime. They have a good selection of very fine hollow and semi-hollow bodies in different sizes and different configurations. I had an AG-75 which is a smaller body hollow body. It was flawless. And this concerns me too, as it was a Sherton II I picked up one day at a store (while traveling for work) and it felt great. Maybe a little large, but the overall package was nice. The 339 is supposed to have a slightly brighter tone, but to my ears, they are really close. The 339 is more comfortable for me to play, and my favorite guitar ATM (though I love both). I've got a Midtown P90 on the way, but I am expecting a big difference in that tone, probably more like a LP with P90s. Anyway, they are all good. My local GC doesn't stock the Epi 339, but Sam Ash does. If you've got one in the neighborhood, I'd go try one on for size. Just to throw in another option, for a little bit more than the Epi 339, the PRS SE Custom Semi Hollow is pretty fine. Best advice is to go to the shop, line them up on stands, and play them back to back for an hour or more. FWIW, I've owned a Sheraton with a 57 Classics upgrade, and it is exactly the same size as a 335, but with a much larger headstock. Sounds and plays very similar to the 335. The Epi seems to have more features IIRC.But, for a smaller body 335, I'm hankering for a Hagstrom Tremar Duece FSexy as all hell with a 25.5" scale neck. I have that one and it's a fabulous guitar. In fact, if every I'm forced to grab just one for all eternity, that would probably be the one.As far as build goes, you can't beat them. The nut on mine was cut a bit off [for the way I play] so I had my luthier replace it with bone. While working on it [keep in mind my luthier does work for people like David Gilmour] he was totally floored by how well built it is. And the necks are to die for.A lot of people really like the stock pickups, but they just weren't for me. I replaced them with a set of Seymour Duncan P-Rails and couldn't be happier. I can switch between humbucker, P-90, single-coil or a mix. The humbucker tones work really well with this guitar, P-90's have tone for day's and the single-coil rails do great country twang. It is closer in tone to a solid body than a larger semi-hollow but still has some of that vibe. And when you crank things up, you can still get those moments when airs shoots out of the f-hole.
