I'll play. Mine would be a ESP Mirage Custom into a Randall RG 100 head on a angled 4x12 Celestion G12 80s.

Only one guitar? Only one amp? No effects? Any guitar with both a single-coil and a (preferably splittable) humbucker into any decent modern modeling amp.

If that's cheating, then **************** versatility, clean tones, the neighbors, and my hearing and give me a Les Paul (or reasonable facsimile) into a Marshal JCM800.

Honestly, I could live with any of my strats through any of my three main amps.

Best? Uh... I'd probably go with a Fender Masterbuilt with a beefy bridge pickup and a Tone King Metropolitan.

into a Fender Twin Reverb (ideally a Fender Twin Reverb preamp section into a McIntosh power amp, but that's a little extreme).

                      Ewww....! Reminds me of this:

I'll take an SG with P90s into an AC30, or a Strat into a JTM-45...

I don' know about best but pretty much anything plugged into my Mesa Boogie Electra Dyne sounds great. The only negative is the reverb control being on the rear.
