Members Verne Andru
Anyone know if Gibson makes 1 grade of P90 or do they vary the pickup quality between, say, a Les Paul Jr. and a Les Paul Standard like Fender does between Fenders and Squiers? Members Elias Graves
Nope. If its Gibson, it's a P90. All the same as far as I know. Epiphones get the cheap ones but even an Epi P90 ain't bad.

Members avenued
I hope so,cause I bought a 60,s tribute and it's the worst guitar I've ever bought. It's flat and dead.I've got a 68 Goldtop and it hums louder than this tribute thing plays.I'm gonna use it for a trade at GC,I'm embarressed to sell it to an indivual.I'm sure the pups on a $2600 new standard gotta be better than this.I know a few guys with studio,s and they're happy,so this gotta be a dud. Yeah, while I don't own a gibson, that is pretty contrary to what I've heard and read. Probably something in the wiring - that's where I'd look first anyway. Try another before giving up? No, but they are capable of wonderful tone, and you can use a noise suppressor, like the Boss NS-2 if it really bothers you. It depends on the amp, pedals, building wiring, and settings as to how much hum you have. I've a couple of Midtowns with P90s and fancy an LP now, I like them so much. Members theManfromAlabam
The quality of your amp (s) and cable (s) make a difference, as does the quality of the electrical circuit/wiring where you are playing, the quality of the lighting can have a major impact. In regards to Gibson using different quality P90's for the level of their guitars? I don't know...I have two low end, one mid grade and one high end Gibson with P90's, they all differ in build quality and tone woods, however, they all sound very similar to one another ({censored}ing Great!) As for a noise gate for the 60 cycle, I have a ISP Decimator, Hush and a cheap $23 Behringer, the Behringer is just as good if not better as the other two for eliminating the noise with a lot of gain, volume and inbetween songs, very little tone loss. Members Flintc
Gibson also has what they call "tapped" P90s. I'm not sure how these work, but the "tapped" sound is smaller and thinner, and perhaps is supposed to emulate the "tired" magnets of vintage instruments? I'm not sure how your tribute's p-90s are, but the way the dog ear pickups are in a junior, the pickup is pretty far from the strings, so raising those poles made a huge difference. Members bluesnapper
I seem to remember honeyiscool did a magnet switch-around with the P90s in his LP Tribute to make them hum-cancelling in the middle position - he said it was really easy to do... voids your warranty though. Other brands of P90 come with an extra connector so you can wire them up to be hum-cancelling if you want - my Bareknuckles did anyway (as an option, not as standard). I really, really love P90s.
