I agree with the pressing too hard comments. Just press hard enough for the strings to contact the frets. Any harder, and you'll pull them sharp. You pretty much answered your own question " i can almost go up a full step by just pressing down hard on the string."

It may be a nut issue as already suggested - it should only require a light touch and move a very small amount before contacting the first 2 frets.

If you're going sharp by pressing too hard then might also be worth going up a string gauge to reduce excess pitch change through finger pressure.

My LP does exactly the same thing! Same string, same sharpness. Bought an Earvana nut, but haven't put it on yet. I might just sell this guitar cause it's so useless to me!

Likely a sticky nut or not cut deep enough (or both).

Yep. Nut slot isn't deep enough. Unless you have fret files, take it in for a pro setup. Are you using heavier strings than the OEM's?

I think i got it solved. I shaved a little bit out of the slot using a utility knife ( i know it's not recommended and if i ruined it i was prepared to buy another nut) and i used a bigger gauge string (from .016 to .018). I think it sounds better now.
