I've read Duff and Slash's books. They are both pretty good.

It's pretty interesting reading about what was going on in GnR as they self destructed. It was pretty much exactly as I imagined it as it was happening. Axl was on a power trip and everyone else was too strung out to do anything about it.

The weirdest part is how they both go out of their way to not say anything bad about Axl.

I think they're both weary of doing anything to "damage" a possible reunion.

I think Slash has ruled it out. I'm fuzzy on Slash's book, but I think he praised his singing/songwriting, but did make mention that Axl was a grade-a dick.

Steven Adler didn't hold back. He said he has always been the sort of person that would confront people if they were being a dick and said he was the only one at the time that had a go at Axl for his dickness. But said he and Axl got along ok because Axl appreciated his honesty even if it wasn't always good. He described Slash as being too shy to ever cause a scene when Axl was on one of his power trips and said no one came in to bat for him when Axl wanted him out, and he felt really let down by Slash(who he'd know since about 13). But he also praises them both a lot too.

Steven Adler did so many drugs he had multiple strokes and talks with a speech impediment. Do you think a guy like hat has a clear memory of what was happening during that time?

Axl is not all dick. Many stories in both books point to the fact that he sometimes can be sweet-natured. Duff mentions for example that Axl was the only band member to take the time and ask about him after his pancreas exploded.

Axl is probably manic-depressive, and the condition was exacerbated by the circumstances surrounding the band. Duff strikes me as the most intelligent of the three. Izzy is probably the most intelligent of the lot.

there was a couple of stories like that in Adlers book, one where they were all on the set of a Clint Eastwood movie and Adler had to get rushed to hospital. When he woke up it was Axl who had been sitting there the whole time waiting to see how he was. For all his controlling weird ways he could also be genuinely caring. The main thing i get out of the books is Axl would piss them all off by delaying concerts, not being ready to go on. Adler said he thinks it was because Axl liked emotion in people, regardless of whether it was good or bad, but he wanted the crowd to be fired up even if it meant they were pissed off.

I've got a lot of respect for Duff and where he came from. He talks a bit about it here...

All those west coast punk guys worked their asses off for a lot of years.

It's interesting him and Cobain kind of came from the same place but ended up in such different bands....lol.

He's actually talking about the Vancouver punk scene of the early 1980's. It's from a documentary called Bloodied but Unbowed which talks about V-Punk and bands like D.O.A., The Subhumans and Art Bergmann. Here's a review.

                              Here's the trailer (NSFW):
