  • PAF pickup suggestions

I got an LTD EC 256 (lemon drop) from my wife for Christmas. I have played it long enough that I feel it is time to make some changes. The stock pickups are usable, but they really don't do the guitar justice. I want some PAF style pickups, a little hotter than vintage output.

I already have Duncan Alnico II Pros, JB/59, and Gibson Classic+/Classic in other guitars and I don't want to use them in this one. It has a mahogany body/neck, set neck, rosewood board.

Suggest me something decent that doesn't cost more than the guitar.

May I suggest Golden Age Overwound Humbuckers from Stewart MacDonald?

They are good sounding pickups at less that $100 for a pair.

I prefer the boutique guys; Lollar, WCR etc. but I recently wanted to change the humbuckers in my cheapo Xaviere 900 to P90 sized 'buckers. I had a used set of WCR Moore-Greens in it that I scored cheap on eBay. I have 3 other bucker guitars and wanted to go for a quasi Casino trip with the Xaviere and P90s without spending a lot on the el cheapo guitar. I reluctantly tried Ken at Rose pickups. Ken did a fantastic job. Couldn't be happier. The wait time was very reasonable, as was the price.

I've always been partial to Duncan Seth Lovers for an original PAF type.

I love my BG Buckers, more than any other PAF I have tried.  I chucked a dark in my bridge for a little more balls and nothing compares.

            "Used" SD-59 neck, SD.JB bridge or SD-59 bridge....I wouldn't spend more than $60.

I have two new EC-256's, one is equipped with PAF's,the other ESP190's/P90's, you are right, they are usable...I am just going to leave mine as they are, I have two little sister's that live within 25 miles of me,I am thinking of leaving one of each with them, this way I will have a guitar to play when I visit my nephews and nieces.

            Unbelievable guitars for the $.

Yeah. They are great guitars for the cash. I love mine.

The bridge pickup is the better of the two, and when both are used the tone is still nice. The neck pickup is just a little too dark for me. I think better pickups will help a guitar that sounds fair come alive.

I'm presuming you wanna kep the coil split option?

I can live without it. I usually don't use it, and I have Strats if I want single coil sound.

I'm keeping an eye on this thread as I just picked up an EC256 myself.  I'm not ready to switch out the pickups yet, but could see myself going for something hotter.  It would be nice to keep the coil tap function if possible, but not necessary.

I got the Lemon Drop model as well.  It's a great looking guitar.  As for the other EC 256 finishes, I'm just not a fan of the relic look.

I use Lollar Imperials. The only way I replace them is with Lollar El Rayo's or BG's. If you want a little hotter I would go with Imperial high winds or whatever Bryan from BG suggests.
