I need to get some work done a bunch of guitars, so want a great place. I know of 2 that are highly rated.............. Strung Out Guitars and Jimmy Egypt Anyone let me know their experience with these guys. Ideally for electrical, refrets and fret dress. They let me borrow an amp once very kindly, but I'd rather find someone who'd used them Moon guitars are great, but I didn't know he did repairs. I live really close to there, so that would be good. A few people have said they use Jimmy Egypt and I've only heard good things Strung Out Guitars are by far the newest on the block, but have a pretty impressive client list. The one good thing about using real pros for basic work is that you can learn a lot from them, they'll often spot stuff that you don't and improve aspects you hadn't thought of and theyre excellent people to know when you come to buy a special guitar. It was a brilliant job, even down to replacing the fret binding. Looking at it, there's no way you can tell it's been refretted. Another place to consider is the tech at Guitar Guitar, Trongate. Members One-armed Alec Posted April 29, 2009 Members Share Posted April 29, 2009 Hi. I tend to do all setup myself, unless it involves filing anything (e.g. frets, nuts). However... I've used Jimmy Egypt twice for nut work (plus general setup at the same time). End results were very good, but on at least one occasion the guitar was worked on not by the man himself, but by one of his assistants, and on getting it back I was a bit disappointed to find some small (and fairly light) surface scratches near the bridge. Minor stuff, but a little bugging. I've used Jimmy Moon's outfit to refret a RW Strat - almost certain that the work was done by an assistant. "Never again", I'm afraid. Jaggy fret ends and some wood missing from the fretboard. Also neglected to replace the old nut, even though the new frets were taller. Poor show. Never used "Strung Out Guitars" for setup, but been into the shop. Run by a couple of women. The one who works behind the counter was a tad cheeky with me when I went in to enquire about trading-in a guitar so I never went back. Can't comment on their repair work... If you ever need some 'specialist' work doing, and you're willing to travel to Bolton, Phil Hartley's first class:http://www.guitarsetup.co.uk/ Fitted a Buzz Feiten nut to my Strat and everything about the way he treated the guitar (and me) was spot-on. Jimmy Egypt worked for 'sound control' until they folded. He had his own place before that for years. I always check out my guitars in Moons before I leave the premises. Jimmy Moon built electric guitars for 2 of my friends back in the late 80's/early 90's. I didn't like the bartolini pickups he put in both of them. They took your face off. I think the chances of either the 2 main men doing the jobs are pretty slim. I'm erring towards Jimmy Egypt. I wish i could find someone who's used Strung Out Guitars. As i said, i borrowed an amp off them, so would like to give them a shot. At the same time though, I'd rather go to someone thats recommeded as i dont want to chuck money away on someone fiddling around with the trus rod (I have wasted mucho cash before on crappy setups) I emailed and got prices from Moon and Strung out. Much of a muchness. Hopefully hear back from Jimmy Egypts. I'll post a second posting on Strung Out. They did me a good turn, but as I said, I'd rather get some reviews on them first. They have a very impressive client base a do all guitar and bass work to the highest standards possible.Everyone I know goes there.
