Opinions about the Line 6 JTV 69 Variax?

I really want one, it's either that, or an American standard stratocaster. The thing is, I need a reliable instrument, something the variax - based upon reviews - is not; but, all the reviews are older, does anyone know if they've gotten any better? I whole heartedly want a variax, but not if they aren't reliable.

I've had one for a few months, the build on this is better than any Strat I've owned (there have been a few). The benefits of the modeling combined with the overall quality makes it a good value only if the modelling aspect is important to you. Just don't expect the modelling on the acoustic instruments to sound authentic through a standard guitar amp. It will always sound better run direct for either recording or live applications. I've used mine in the studio with great results. It works best with a POD device, I believe with HD500 or newer, but I could be mistaken about that.

The originals didn't have magnetic pickups. http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/jun03/articles/line6variax.asp

The James Tyler models are supposed to be better then the originals for playability and have magnetic pickups in them. Here's an older review. http://www.guitarworld.com/review-li...s-tyler-variax

They've come out with many newer models since.

First, buy your JVT-69 used! There are bargains to be had.

The JTV-69 really needs a Stratocaster neck to avoid High & Low "E" string fall off common to the stock neck (on Korean Made '69s).

I recommend to buy the highest quality Mighty Mite neck you can find or spend extra cash and get a Warmoth neck.

I also replaced the lackluster pickups with SD Cool Rails Neck, SD Hot Rails (neck) for middle and DiMarzio Super Distortion for bridge.

This is a great guitar and sounds great modeling, conventional or blended if you use a POD HD500/x

The original iteration of the Variax guitar from about 10 years ago (i.e. -- the non-James-Tyler model) was a mere toy in comparison to what's currently available.

A little while back, Line6 finally began allowing independent installations of the Variax module in guitars that aren't distributed by Line6. You have to be an approved vendor to get the Variax hardware to install inside guitars. Warmoth is one such approved vendor.
