Do you normally by music gear new or used?

Maybe it depends on the item?

What items will you only buy new?

I don't mind each way but I tend to buy used pedals the most and with guitars it just depends. I always go to the used sections first and look for deals. I have no problem buying used gear.
Gear1996 Strat deluxe, Schecter TSH-1, Squire standard Strat, Dearmond M65-C, Blues JR, Crate VC20, Bugera V5. Vox Time Machine, Keeley mod DS1, Wampler Euphoria, Vox wah.

I do both. I'll buy a used guitar or speaker in a heartbeat.

Im a little more cautious about amps, pedals, mixers (more complicated electronic gear). I'll do it, but I'm a lot more price concious on stuff that may quit on me and be too hard or too expensive to repair.

About half of my guitar collection is used. Most of my pedals were bought new, and of my amps, my AC30 amd cabs were all used, my AC15 was a B-stock former floor model, and AC4 and Pathfinder were new.

Whenever the price is good for what I'm looking for, I don't care, really. But I always shop used first.

Other than nick-nacks, I don't think I've *ever* bought a brand new piece of gear in my life. Also never bought a new car or a new house, nor will I ever.

My ideal piece of gear is dirt cheap and somehow broken so I can make some stupid repair and wind up with it for .10 cents on the dollar. Can't even tell how many amps I've bought as 'broken' that needed a nickles worth of contact cleaner.

Pretty comical, the utter mechanical incompotence in modern society, however I can definitely appreciate its critical importance to consumerism and if it weren't for all those geniuses buying new, it wouldn't the rest of us such a deep bench of used stuff to choose from for less money.

400+ guitars, only five were new. At least 100 amps, one new.

            Give it a rest man.

For the most part I have bought used, I have bought new maybe 3 times.

It takes many great minds to do something spectacular and just one simpled minded person to make something very complex.

            Lately, I trade for used.

If I come across a used instrument and am in a buying mood, and I like it, I usually buy it. If, after a while, I don't like it, it goes back to the pawn shop, or maybe sell it to one of my kids friends. I wouldn't sell anyone a guitar with problems, unless that person didn't care. Most of the guitars that I have owned with problems ended up at the pawn shop, for $$ for a better instrument or 3.

So many guitars, so little time

Used guitars for the most part, new pedals because I don't have the patience to wait for one I want to pop up.

Used, for the most part.  I'm patient enough to wait for a decent deal when I feel like I need something.

New. But I only buy expensive stuff when retailers are blowing it out.

Pretty much only accessories I buy new. Everything else is bought used or traded. Occasionally, I'll buy a pedal new if I can't find a good deal on a used one.

Preferably used. If my gas is stronger than my patience, or I'm lusting for something that's impossible to find (cheap) used, I sometimes buy my toys brand new.

Most of my stuff lately has been new. I have nothing against used but I can't always find what I want used.
RoboPimp: yup, part of growing up is abandoning any hopes and dreams and giving up on anything that you feel passionate about or makes you happy. then comes years of waiting for sweet death.

Both. I'll usually look for it used first, though. Always looking for a great deal, and I've gotten some REALLY great deals over the years on both new and used gear.
