His website says they will debut at over $1000. You are kidding yourself if you think that is a good value for any reason other than the fact that you like Chappers and want to support his brand. People are buying American made Gibson Les Pauls for close to that in the deals sticky.

I do agree with you that his playing is nothing worth digging though. It's all just nonstop playfast wankydank and powerchord chugging, nothing melodic or musical. In his facebook comments he frequently compares himself to Phil X and tries to say that he is also a session artist, like Phil, who has done a ton of contract work for major artists (i've never heard of an example).

i can buy a Chapman ML-1 from Andertons and get it shipped to Australia for exactly $700. A PRS SE is about $1000 here, similar price for an Epi Les Paul. A Gibson Les Paul Standard here is about $2900, even the 60's tribute models are close to $1500 unless it's on sale. American made means nothing to me, it's just another import from somehwere else in the world, but i understand it may mean more if you live in the US and want to buy local. The main thing i like about Chapman guitars is the community decides what specs they are going to be, not him. I may never own one but i like that he puts it to the people to decide, not board members and accountants.

edit: i just checked Andertons and shipped to the US is also exactly $700.

I think he and the Captain are the most entertaining and informational reviewers on youtube right now, can't really see any of the problems the OP are stating.

I can see where you're coming from. Now Chappers or Phil-X for that matter understood before others how to connect with people on youtube by having a serious laugh even though they are outstanding and dedicated players. If there is a youtube gear teenage hall of fame, they have a right to be inducted. Now will their music be remembered or listened to at all ? Will they still be reviewing gear when they're 64 ? Mmmh, I think they will put up festivals, create music schools, get their faces on TV for some humanitarian rock'n roll concept, and if you ask me there's nothing wrong with it. Now is this all a kind of business plan? It is for sure, but a pretty groovy one. Groovier than most of our daily jobs anyway. As for the looks, Chappers might never escape the 90s. Video killed the radio stars, but they're back on youtube!

even though they are in some vids together I wouldn't put Phil X in the same category as Chapman.

Phil's not just a youtube sensation. Dude does studio work for some big name musicians, and replaced Richie Sambora for the last bit of Bon Jovi's tour.

Chapman is obviously and excellent guitarist but he's not much more than a youtube phenomenon.

As for the OP....I kind of do "get" some of what your saying, about him, but I don't think he's that bad.

It's just simply modern self marketing and promotion. It's the way a lot of people have chosen to try to make a living. If he can do it then more power too him. The constant shilling is something I don't think I could ever do. I personally find it embarrassing. But it many don't.

So I just take what I want from people like him. Which is basically what they give away for free, and ignore whatever they are trying to sell me, unless I really really want it (which is basically never). I see that as a fair trade off. I put up with their attempts to pitch me, to get information out of the vids I'm interested in. If they keep putting out vids with less and less content and more and more pitching, then I just stop watching those people.

AFAIK Chappers has been demoing gear for a number of well known brands for several years, and the relatively recent Youtube fame happened after he fell out with Orange Amps.

He's certainly having fun making the videos, and doesn't seem to be taking things too seriously - which probably comes across badly for some people. As for his playing, I've heard him demo gear in a wide range of styles: his demo of the PRS 245 with some Peter Green style playing was enough to make me want a PRS for the first time ever.

Most likely he's just a guy with some hopes and plans of making a living from music by a slightly unconventional route, playing gear than many would love to own and having a lot of fun doing it.

Chappers and the Captain are a couple of my most watched demo/gear video hosts. Followed by Phil X, PGS Andy, Jason from NextLevel and Ms. Rebecca Dirks.

Not a fan of that O'Malley guy, Johnny Demarco, The Tone King, Jason from WMS and Dan Miller from EHX. They either play/sound like ****************, can't pause recording for 3 seconds to tune up or are just plain annoying.

I like his videos. The conversations crack me up. Occasionally I'll cringe because they'll repeat some misinformation or whatever but it's Internet.

Now as for his playing I find it to be pretty devoid of real content but that's just my opinion. I wish I had half his speed because I'd like to think I'm doing more.

He's a smooth talking, natural salesman, and he can play a mean git-tar. Granted, his ego has gotten a bit large, he's kind of a shameless self-promoter, and he'll sell anything for an endorsement. But I don't consider him a douchebag. He seems like a good guy you can hang with, who doesn't have many bad things to say about anything. He's a perfect guy to show off guitar gear.

I enjoy his playing, and his reviews are informative. If I could play as well as he does, I wouldn't feel shy about showing it off, either.
