So I had been thinking about using some GC certificates for a multi effects board. I did the next best thing and traded my Traynor GynaGain for a multi effects board with a speaker attached - also known as the Roland Cube 40XL. The 40 watts would get me close the the 65 watts in the Traynor DynaGain, in a much smaller plackage, plus goobs of effects and canned amps, PLUS a LOOPER. And a looper is big for me. I spent about 15 minutes with the Cube. I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE it.

                • Woody...it's best to match the output impedance of an amp, but you can drive a higher impedance cabinet with a tube amp without TOO much issue...eventually the output transformer may over heat...but driving a lower inpedance cab, ESPECIALLY with a tube amp, will quickly result in a blown transformer, and if not that then cooked power tubes and sockets...

                  Comment

                  • I'm not positive about guitar amps, but I know that in the car and home audio worlds trying to push a lower resistance than what the amp is rated for will result in smoke and sometimes even a full on fireworks show.

When you drop the ohm load, the amp sees less resistance which makes the amp work harder trying to keep up with the speakers, especially at high volumes. This results in burnt up transformers an boards.

Now, on the other hand, a higher ohm load let's the amp work less and results in cooler running transformers, less heat disapation, and in most cases better sound quality.

                    So, 8 ohm amp + 16 ohm load = OK, 8 ohm amp + 4 ohm = bad

                      • Jello & D - Thanks.

BB - I kind of like that. I have had both Epi & Gibson SG's, and IMO it is better to spend the extra money and get the Gibby. The Gibby's have better balance.

GEARWISE: This Cube 40 is gonna be a ton of fun. They put one amp in there "Dynamp" I think they call it - it is super sensitive to pick attack - it goes from near clean to crush just with pick attack. Some companies that do amp models kind of hint about the amps they are voicing - not Roland. In the manual they flat out name the amps - Fender Twin Reverb, AC30, Fender Tweed Bassman among others. I've gone full circle. My first amp was a Cube 30. This is it's newest replacement.

                        • That gold SG could be one of the ones I look for later down the road when I want a nice US guitar. I like goldtops, but I think SGs would be better for me then LP. They're like 1300 new though, so I dunno how much they'll end up used for.

                          • evenin all... Monday Night Football, woohoo. Pre ordered an IPhone 4S... may change my mind though. I like the Galaxy S2.

I did not wind a single thing today. I decided I needed a day to relax a bit and run some errands. Im sending my celery surfcaster to a local bud, and getting a couple of Weber 10" speakers. I plan on building a cab for the Newcomb amp. I'm thinking of making the cab similar to a 2 x 12 Mesa cab that had one sealed and 1 partially open back...

                            • I just bit on one of the $140 Squier Standard Strats from Amazon. I think I'm going to put the Carvin neck on that. Maybe I'll drop in a set of import Mariposas next time they're available.
