Best website for learning to read music?

When you google for websites to teach you how to read music there are so many links and so many people trying to make a fast buck. Can someone please recommend a really great website that will teach a complete novice how to read music in simple to understand language?

That's a pretty good online site.

 

I find having a book for learning how to read helps a lot. Because you can read it anytime, anywhere as opposed to only in front of a computer. But, there is nothing wrong with having multiple resources either. It keeps your head in the game.

 

You can look at textbooks, or just get the Hal Leonard collection, or The Alfred's book, even something like Reading Music for Dummies, or one of the Reading Music Made Easy type books, etc...I use a lot flute books, violin books, piano books, and realbooks, etc...

 

You'll go through a couple of processes. One is understanding how to read, or how to comprehend what you are seeing in front of you, like the notes on the staff, the note's duration, rhythms, etc... The second is being able to place these on the fretboard, where the notes are, physically playing the rhythms, etc... And thirdly, putting it all together. Of course this last piece will be the most difficult.

It gives you a staff of melody/single notes in treble clef, as well as the harmony across treble and bass clef. Also, the charts are very clean and pretty easy to read.
