  • Christmas tipping?

Any sort of rule of thumb as to what I should tip my guitar instructor for Christmas?

    $25? $50? $75?

He charges $35 an hour for lessons.

I have a handful of private students. Honestly, I never have expectations over tipping. I always appreciate it when they do. Typically, they get me gift cards worth anywhere from $10-$50.

    Does that help?

Thinking too much produces exactly the opposite of the intended outcome.

Same here. I never expect anything, but I always appreciate it when I do receive something. Most often it's gift cards to coffee shops or sometimes chocolates or other holiday treats. Usually nothing expensive or extravagant.

I think students should tip in the $500-1000 dollar range.

Mosiddiqi, I just listened to Those Time Johnnies you have listed in your signature. I didn't realize you were a mezzo-soprano. You look more like a tenor.

I just got mine a gift card to a nice restaurant for $125. Admittedly I think this is a bit high, but I have been studying with this particular instructor (I change it up) for almost a year and really like him / appreciate what I have gained from the lessons.

I'm thinking about 1 week's worth of lessons - the equivalent in cash or gift card.

Got mine a bottle of Captain Morgan Private Reserve. He seemed happy with it.

Well, I suppose you could practice it, but I don't. It just developed naturally... sort of like a rash. -- Nigel Tufnel on intonation and rhythmic synchronization.
