Overdrive Pedal Under $50

Recommended Posts

I'm spending $50 on an overdrive pedal, don't tell me to save up for something better because $50 is my max.

Any suggestions besides the usual Bad Monkey that is thrown about on every forum? (I play mostly like post rock and garage rock through a Fender Super Champ head)

I'm really open to anything (preferably not plastic) as long as it's $50 or under.

Welcome to HC.

For that price, you're probably going to have to look for something used. Electro Harmonix has recently released a bunch of inexpensive drive pedals. The East River Drive is a TS-808 clone while the Soul Food is Klon-inspired. Both are excellent sounding pedals and you can easily find them for fifty bucks used - and not much more than that brand new.

Here's one of each being sold used by GC:

Ebay and Reverb would also be good places to look. Oh, and the EHX Glove would be another good one to look for - that one has more of a Fulltone OCD type vibe to it.

Joy makes an entire like of popular clones, very well made and sound excellent too.

If you shop hard you could buy a couple for $50.

Two I'd recommend are the JF-01 which is a Ibanez TS-808 clone. They are what I call a must have pedal for your kit because they cover so many different kinds of music and mix well with all kinds of pedals. They provide a creamy drive that can be dialed up for a little overdrive of full smmoth saturation. Nice overtones come from this one.

The JF-02 is a Fulltone OCD clone. Its bright, aggressive and in your face. No problem cutting through a mix and dominating your sounds with this one plus its got a norma and high gain mode.

The JF-03 is a MI Audio Crunch Box clone and the FF-04 is a metal pedal. The Metal pedal is a Marshall Shred Master clone, another essential pedal for a pedal board for high gain stack tones. (I skipped buying this one because I own several Marshall pedals including a Governor for those tones)

Heres a list of they're pedals and what they copy. http://www.tonestart.com/ultimate-joyo-guitar-pedal-clone-list/

I did buy one of they're AC tone pedals. They are a little different then your normal drive pedals. You'd use them just before an amp at the end of your pedal chain so they act as a guitar amp head preamp to model the amps tone. I bought the AC because I have Marshall and Fender amps so I really don't need to model they're tones. The Vox tones you get from the AC are super cool. The way the midrange voice and drive work together creates a wide range of unique tones you cant get from other pedals. If you like making your strings self sustain and whistle, this pedal will get you there. It can be dialed back for all kinds of jangly British amp tones too.
