So, best budget-friendly delay?

So it seems like it's been a while since we had one of these threads.

I'm looking for a delay to throw in the effects loop of my amp. On my main board I have an m9 that takes care of most of my modulation but when I visit family on the other coast I need a delay, and as I'm not out there as much as I should be, I'm not looking to spend a lot. :0

I'm not looking to shoegaze with this delay, I mostly end up playing classic rock/pop and some 80's pop tracks with friends and family, so it doesn't need to be super versatile and I won't be shooting for much oscillation.

So, what's your favorite cheap delay, digital and analog?

For cheap, you can get one of those Behringer 24 bit digital delay pedals. http://www.epiphone.com/News/Feature...Challenge.aspx or the analog version for $25 http://www.sweetwater.com/store/deta...FQoNaQodNIAA0w

The stereo one is actually pretty good and can produce a sound as good as most of my rack units. They don't color the echo sound like many boutique pedals do however. If you want that then maybe the analog version would do. I just don't like the analog because they get real noisy, especially trying to get long echoes.

The 24 bit is dead quiet with no background noise at all and has the ability to get really long echoes up to 1300 ms. Analog pedals in contrast are usually good up to maybe 500 ms or even less. This gives you more of a slap back tempo. The sound quality on the 24 bit is pretty much an exact duplicate straight signal. No coloration at all. Its allot like actual reel to reel and getting a high fidelity copy of the original signal. Some people including myself prefer a higher fidelity echo.

Many who play guitar do like a low or lower fidelity echo tone. The signal decays quickly as the repeats occur and even the first echo lower quality. The sound of the echo is more telep[hone tone having its highs and lows rolled off between 500~5Khz leaving mostly mids as the echo repeats (much like aan actual tape echo does) This makes the straight signal of the guitar heard easily above the repeats and can crank the echo levels up without the dry signal being lost behind the echoes. A higher fidelity pedal can wash out the original signal if you go above 1:1

I wouldn't mind seeing someone add a filter into a digital pedals that could color the echoes tone. It would be simple to do using a pot and two caps. There are other ways of doing it, splitting, EQing and remixing the signals but that's a real hassle. Having a digital pedal that would produce high medium and low fidelity echoes would be ideal for getting the best of both.

The Ibanez DE-7 is about the only pedal in the "Tone-Lok" series that gets any love from pedal nerds.

Yes, I recall hearing about the DE7 in past discussions, good to get another rec for it. This might also be a good place to confirm I'm totally cool with buying used, in fact I may just prefer it.

Also, I appreciate that "budget-friendly" is relative, and in fact I like the ambiguity in the interest of hearing opinions. That said, this is really about delays that can be had for <$100, and the lower, obviously the better. Thanks! thu.gif

another vote for the de-7

Ok, I've decided not to count this one. :cop:

I see you have one fs in your sig; let me be the first to PM you with the offer of $10 shipped. My secretary has already obtained a money order for $50, though, so if you could refund me $40, payable in Lane Bryant gift cards, along with your item, I would appreciate it.Thanks!

There's a ton of echoes below $100

Here's another cheap one that also incorporates chorus. http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/VM1

What I use is one of these. It gives me 100 different reverbs and echoes. I just keep it on my amp in the effects loop (or before the head) and run a foot switch to my floor board. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Alesis-Midiverb-III-Effects-Processor-/231526209408?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item35e8099780 If you run a single amp, you can run the second out to the PA and get 3D echo tones.

Haven't tried them but allot of players like the Joyo stuff. http://www.aliexpress.com/item/JOYO-Newest-Dr-J-D54-Shadow-Echo-Analog-Delay-Electric-Guitar-Effect-Pedal-25mA-free-shipping/32271286399.html?spm=0.0.0.0.AKzL5K

At the moment though, both Musician's Friend and Sweetwater don't have them in stock... but $50? I'd say that falls squarely into the budget friendly price range.

DE-7 is awesome.

I wanna get that Behringer Deluxe Memory Man copy

Vintage Time Machine is the name of it IIRC. There was a thread with a clip from Goodhonk about it just the other day...

Thanks! Yeah, I really enjoyed Goodhonk's demo and I'm very glad to see they're still in production. I've been intrigued by a number of the suggestions but this one really does sound great...

And yes, $50 for a decent sounding delay is definitely budget friendly. :thu::love:
