surf/space/spy lounge

Some time back there was a very cool thread/"lounge" devoted to discussions of surf, space and what I like to call "spy" music, which is the kind of twangy stuff you hear in James Bond movies and the like. This summer I want to track down some the best albums these genres have to offer, both obvious and obscure, so let's discuss those too.

So who here likes Man or Astroman? I have the Eeviac album and I think it rocks, but I'm wondering if their earlier stuff is better.

What do you guys consider to be the best surf and space rock bands?

Man or Astro Man!!!

I got to see them a couple of times back in the day. They're from Alabama as well.

There's another band from my area called daikaiju. You have to check these guys out. I'm going to see them this Friday. They are montrous, these guys tour all over the place and have played with Dickie Betts.

Here's the link to their website.

Hey, you forgot the most important one: Spaghetti Western

I've dabbled in a lot of things for as long as I've been playing, but instrumental/surf-ish kind of stuff is my main thing, I guess. The guy who taught me how to play was into all this stuff, and it's always been at the root of whatever I've done since.

A lot of great stuff out there from fairly new-ish (not 60's) bands...

3 Balls of Fire

Pollo Del Mar

Aqua Velvets

Bambi Molesters

Insect Surfers

Slacktone

Swiv-O-Matics

The Mermen

Check out Pollo Del Mar's "The Golden State".

edit: Hmmm....I think I went overboard with the use of the word "stuff" in this post. :(

I have an album by the Mermen that started off well and got really boring...I'll dig it out and see which one it is.

Well, what do you like? Something more chilled out and spacey, or hard and rockin' (but still surf)?

Something cartoony/retro or something that's trying to merge the old instrumental stuff with other sensibilities/genres?

I like it all, really. Right now what I'd like some more of is the "hard rockin'" surf variety.

My favorite Man Or Astroman record is "Experiment Zero". Haven't listened to all of them, though. "Eeviac" is pretty good.

If you want to listen to some Spanish Surf-Rock, try to find "Caliente Caliente" by Los Coronas, they are a great band. Not spacey like Man Or Astroman, but pretty cool.

On Los Straitjackets' album "!Viva! Los Straitjackets", there are three tunes that could be used as movie themes:

"Lonely Apache" - When I hear this, I picture James Stewart, Robert Ryan, Richard Widmark, and John Wayne riding their horses along a ridge. Perfect c.-1960 Western theme music.

"Lurking in the Shadows" - Theme for a "Private Eye" movie.

"Espionage" - Secret agent, man.

Great live show, too, particularly when joined by the World-Famous Pontani Sisters.

Yeah. Can anyone recommend any good spaghetti western stuff? I mean, I know the old Leone films and whatnot, and a guy I knew up in Milwaukee burned me some weird old western and porn soundtracks from 1960s Italy. It's been a while since I listened to that stuff, so suggestions are suggested. Thanks!

Everyone always says this, but I bought their soundtrack for
The Strangler's Wife
and didn't dig it too much.

I've never heard that one. I have "China Gate" and "Crashes to Light, Minutes to its Fall." I really like both of those.
