Members Faber
He's been using a RAT since some time in the 80s. I think some of his drive tones are also from those Mesa Boogie Mark II or IIIs he was using for a good long while.
Members Faber
Do you want something like Sco's sounds, or something like fusion tones in general? Either way I'd say that a RAT is a nice place to start. And of course the TubeScreamer would be a good choice.
Members jeffinaustin
If you're wanting something really smooth and sustained (a la Scofield, Larry Carlton, Scott Henderson, etc...) try the Xotic BB Preamp. It can do a great clean boost all the way to hi gain sounds but is extremely quiet. With the gain about 12:00 you don't hear a ton of grit and it sustains forever and sounds really smooth. That's just one of many options but one that I'm familiar with.
Members Faber
Oh yeah, another thing is that a lot fusion guitar is very compressed indeed. So getting both a overdrive/distortion pedal and a comp might be a good idea
Members erksin
Check out a Hermida Mosferatu - very smooth with lots of sustain. Very clear and articulate - great for chording too. www.hermidaaudio.com

Members jeffinaustin
The BB Preamp IS a pedal. Check out this link. There's also quite a few videos demoing this pedal on their site. GREAT tone. BB Preamp
Members gappie
there are so many nice pedals for 'fusion'. check also out the banzai fireball 2 and the zendrive. for sco's tone: indeed a rat and a boogie and a semihollow guitar. hit the strings hard near the nut. also in the both pups setting. Members fernmeister
sco is not very fussy about amps, but often goes to el84 based designs. in several intereviews he has said he will gig and record with what is available. the rat is his basic tone for overdrive, though he sets the gain low, so you can get that tone with a TS type pedal, or something like a fireball, or tubeblower. also, he plays a lot of leasd with his eq pedal, which is set up like a treble boost. of course sometimes he uses both. a big part of his sound, or the classic carlton sound is the guitar. you need a resonant guitar and pretty solid strings. sco plays 13s.
