  • Vintage Wah Pedals - Which sound the best?

Ok so I was cruising craigslist and came across an ad for some old wahs.

And a quick quote from his description.
I've collected Wah pedals since they first became available in the 60's. Here's a collection of eight Wah's that I personally bought in the 60s and 70s. The Union Jack model is from the 80s, it has sold and is no longer available. The others are still available. I used each one of them during my career as a studio muso in Hollywood. Yes, I even played some porno movie sound tracks with a couple of them. That's actually a pretty good paying gig.

    Well... He wants $75 each.

Which of them will sound like money?

The inductors are a "key". I like the 70's TDK style but most put the "money" on the 60's fasel type. Cry Baby was the name of the USA models and VOX on the other side of the pond.

Also, The Babies should have a Thomas Organ bottom plate out of California or Chicago if they are the vintage / pre-Dunlop types.

I'd pick up about 5 of them. They're probably worth a tad more than $75 each.

Mmm..Especially the VOX models which tend to be priced higher than their CryBaby counterparts.

I paid $130ish for my TDK 5103. Probably overpaid, but it sounds awesome.

I got a Thomas Crybaby with the tdk 5103 as a gift and I had to mod it to death to get it too sound good. Maybe it's just mine but stock was the yuck.

I've had a 70's Vox Thomas Organ with the TDK for the last 23 years.
the pivot is kind of squeeky when playing at low volumes, but other than that,no complaints.

I'm gonna stop by the guys place in about an hour. I'll try 'em all but I'm thinking I might go for a Vox. Now... King Vox? V847? Hmm...

Sorry, I'm not too savy on inductors and all that. But here's what he told me about them through e-mail.
Yup, they're all in good shape. Various inductors,
halos, fasel, square TDK. Some have carbon 1/4w
resistors. Some have metal or carbon film resistors.
One of them is a little wishu-wishu in mid-travel.
I replaced one of the 1/4" jacks on one of them as the
original was losing it's "spring" on the tip connector.

Each one is a little different in sound, filter range etc.
As you'd expect for any filter device. Even with the exact
same components, the variance in tolerance for the resistors
and caps will, of course, mean the effect will be different
                between essentially every pedal.

The Union Jack model is already sold unfortunately.

sell them, get a wilson 12 position and spend the change on hookers and blow

It's tempting to buy them all... But I just don't have the cash! But maybe I could spring for two...

Dunno. But I bought one. Got one of the v847. He said it has a fasel inductor. It's got a nice sweet wah sound!

The Guitar Research one sounded suprisingly nice for a brand I haven't heard of. It was by far the most porno wah of them all.

Ask for gut shots and be very selective. If he only wants $75 each they are likely all TDK inductors or later models.
