Members Cirrus
Sorry if this has already been posted; http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b014w3ld/The_Record_Producers_The_Record_Producers_Pink_Floyd_Special/ Producers talk through a few of their tracks, and actually bring along some multitracks, soloing individual parts and talking through the recording process. Members Cirrus
The thing that's striked me about hearing them soling stuff is how transparent the whole mix process is - the basic recorded tracks sound like the final mixed mastered release, just without the echo and reverb. Any EQ'ing must have been minimal, and there's little in the way of post processing like extra compression. It was recorded to sound like a mix. Members Loobs
Minimal EQing is the best way to do it. Not to mention the gear they tracked through in the 60s at Abbey Road sounds pretty phenomenal.

I've seen David Gilmour break down mixes before and I though the same thing. The individual tracks sound incredible....then throw on some echo and boom that's it. Members Loobs
all about the signal chain/micing. You shouldn't have to do hardly anything to the tracks after they've been committed to tape.
Members ambientnoize
This is awesome! I'm literally blown away at how in depth some of the analysis is of the recording process, as well as how great the tracks sound!
Members ambient
Plenty of engineers do most of their eq and compression work on the way in. when it comes time to actually mix, the job's mostly done. My guess I'd that has something to do with what you're hearing.
