  • Anyone here use a Lemon Drop?

    http://www.lumpystoneshop.com/lemondrop.htm

It's shooting for the Vox hybrid amp tones - 7 and 4 series, as used by the Beatles on Revolver and Sgt. Pepper. Think "Paperback Writer" - IOW, one of Phil's Holy Grail Guitar Tones.

Why have I never heard of this thing before?

I'd love to get a Castledine Magical Mystery Box, but IIRC, they're about $400, and there's no way I can justify it right now. But the clips of this sound close in terms of the basic tone... it lacks the resonant EQ, but I have a wah and know how to park it.

If you have one, or have played one, what did you think? I'd love to hear it being processed with oodles of compression and a bit more grit than they have dialed up in the few clips I've been able to find...

No, but i've always been kind of interested in these Lumpy's Tone Shop pedals.

What's your take on amp-in-a-box type pedals Phil?

I've always been a tad sceptical about them. I'm pretty happy with my foundation dirt sounds, and for anything over and above that it seems like a weird choice to make

That really does sound wonderful, the demo vid working in some very "And Your Bird Can Sing"-esque licks there...wow. I, I really shouldn't be wanting it as much as I do, but I've lusted after that Revolver guitar tone for a VERY long time...

Just a 2n2222 and a FET? Looks like a trimpot to set the bias, probably a J201 or something similar for the FET. Remarkably good tones for such a simple circuit. Price point is about right.

          Good find, Phil!

Don't have the Lemon Drop, but his Jelly Roll is my favorite OD ever. It booted a Bearfoot HBOD and Greer Ghetto Stomp off of my board. Very dynamic with a great range of tones. I suspect the Lemon will be good too.

No, but a company that lets you choose between top and side mounted jacks has got to know what's up.

I actually like amp-in-a-box pedals. They're generally not a substitute for the real thing, but they can definitely give you the vibe of the real deal when paired with a sympathetic amp, and can sometimes yield interesting tones when paired with an unsympathetic one.

I'm all about tonal versatility and flexibility.

I agree - pretty cool of them to give people a choice of box size / jack location.

Come on folks - someone has to have tried this in person...

For his standard models I've never had to wait more than a couple of weeks. He built me a custom 73 Boost that took about a month. Friendly guy. Replies to email in a timely manner. Fixed a broken foot switch for free, fast. I recommend Tommy at Lumpy's without any reservation.

Stones, Jimmy Page and a slew O folks used 'em in the studio as well. (The TRIUMPH S.S. heads sound close-think Keith in Rock N' Roll circus).

I've only had this pedal 'bout a week or so, haven't had a chance to run it through any decent amps yet.

As far as your thought of

Agreed. As I'll be running around from Dec 13 to Jan 8th, How about I send it north and you record some samples w/it? If you could have it back around Jan. 8th, it'd be a go.

SuperBolt is a copy of the ROG Supro in a box. This seems to be going for the solid state Vox tones.

It's a very nice pedal, I regret getting rid of the one I had. I liked the way it colored my tone for Beatles type stuff but I thought the higher frequency spectrum (treble) was a little too fuzzy with the gain turned up. I'll definitely have to try one again as the amp I had could have been the culprit (too much mids/Tweed Princeton style circuit).
