  • YESSSS!!!!!! I love it when I have a chance to drum up support for my lifelong cause to stop the EVIL EMPIRE OF CLONED/GENERIC PRODUCTS!!!!!!

Just because you have a popular product doesn't mean some jerks can just come in and copy it and sell it for less!!! What kind of immoral sack of **************** would EVER buy a Dr. Pepper clone for $0.39 a can instead of paying the full $0.75 a can to the rightful owner and inventor of such a glorious drink. UNITED WE STAND!!!!!! WE CAN DO IT!!!!!

    • People do what their pockets will allow them to do. If someone has less money but has knowledge of electronics and wants to buy a kit and build their own box of circuits that is just like a box of circuits that someone else makes, its their perogative to do so. Its no disrespect to the original builder of the first box of circuits. In a sense, the person is "manufacturing" their own pedal. After all, manufacturing simplified is looking at instructions and building something whether it be a garment or a house or a well developed distortion pedal. That's why kits of almost any sort are cheaper than the finished product. Its cheaper to buy a cake mix and bake your own cake because you are "manufacturing" the cake yourself. Many times, professionally made cakes are better than homemade cakes because someone who knows cakes and makes them every day made the cake. The homemade cake, however is still labor and can still be called a cake whether its better or worse than the professionally made cake. Why? Neither the professional nor the homemade cake baker invented the ingredients. A box of capacitors, resistors and pots are just that. How people put them together is what makes them unique. If you want to put it together yourself, its no disrespect to the inventor of the original box, you are simply incurring the manufacturing costs on your own.
Buying copied pedals delves more into ethics but that is not quite the case with DIY pedals. Its usually simply a matter of disposable income. Many musicians have less of it, so its an opportunity for those who have more time than money (i.e. broke, out-of-work musicians) to have the pedals they want without paying the price that the MIGHT pay if they had the money. Since many would rather buy the pedal than build it, that alone cuts down on the numbers of those who would buy a kit.

A man walks up to a set of twins and asks which one was born first. The older twin says "I was". Then man then proceeds to pull out a handgun and shoots the younger twin. The older twin screams "What'd you do that for?". The man looked at him sternly and said "I don't approve of cloning"

      • We all applaud builders for improving on tubescreamers, fuzz faces, analog delays, etc., how about someone making improved zvex pedals - for 1/2 to 2/3 the price? If they are improved, ZVEX can't do anything about it. If he improves his after said pedals are manufactured, HE would be the copycat!!!

          • I want to know what it is that allows boutique pedal builders like Zvex to hike up the prices so much. There's no way in hell the parts cost that much if some random German guy can sell clones for a third of the price.

            • Yeah, that's exactly what I'm thinking. Keep in mind the parts would cost more in Germany to begin with. Even Boss pedals are a little overpriced, really. Markup shouldn't be over twice the value of the pedal, unless it's really special.

              • I keep hearing the whole "we do it by hand" and "we only manufacture a few, so we have to hike up the prices to meet supply and demand".

                Yeah, ok.

People pay for a brand name. Or to make it simpler, he can charge whatever he wants, as long as people will pay it. His pricing scheme seeks to have worked out well for him whether you like his pedals or not. He's like the Apple of the boutique guitar effect industry.

                    • Alright everybody, here's the plan: Boycott Zvex. If you really need an oscillating fuzz, get a deviever for a fraction of the price. Problem solved.

Yeah, I forgot that one. $10 says Zvex would get just as much, if not, more business if he lowered the prices on his pedals. There's no way in hell I'm gonna pay $300 for a fuzz just because it can oscillate. I'll be happy with the fuzz on my OD-20.

And the beauty of all this is that you don't have to buy one. Just like people don't have to buy clones if they have a problem with it.
