How to vibrato?

I've been playing guitar for about 7 months and I'm into bands like Pantera and Megadeth. I've been trying to vibrato for a while now and I noticed I am doing it incorrectly (using my fingers). I usually get suggestions such as, "bend with your wrist, not your fingers..." which is the right technique, but I can never emulate this. I always watch these tutorial videos on youtube or read advice on forums, and they're all pretty mediocre. If someone could explain to me in full detail how to vibrato for complete beginners or give me a few links to some videos, that'd be great

Not saying I'm a vibrato virtuoso but...just relax.  Just a little is okay.  Less is more.  One of my peeves is seeing or hearing people do it because they think they're supposed to because their heroes 'shake notes'...and it sounds {censored}ing horrible.  Erratic, wide, violent vibrato is balls. 

 

Also - learn to do it in bends as well.  Another peeve is to hear or see people play a long unbent note with psycho vibrato...then on a long bent note - straight as an arrow.  Do it right, or don't do it at all.

Not trying to sound like a douche but the answer is probably practice.  

Copy what you have seen/heard in tutorials and keep on practicing.  Like a lot of guitar techniques it is a case of training your hands to make the sounds you want to hear.  Like any skill, you need to build up the strength and accuracy to do it correctly.  It might sound bad at first but just keep trying, keep improving and one day you'll nail it.

the behringer vb-2 clone has a hold mode so you can just press the pedal down, and for the duration you hold it down it activates the vibrato.

 

but yea, i suck at vibrato on bends. as far as on non-bends, just swivel your wrist a bit and practice it for a while, you'll get it

Oh, you didn't want youtube. OK. the best technique is to use as many fingers on the string at once as you possibly can. 3 fingers of your fretting hand all on the same string can provide a good smooth vibrato. You pull the string away/down, if possible. You do this by making a subtle clenching motion. If you are playing the high E string, you will have to push up, not clench.

You could also shake your fretting fingers lengthwise along the fretboard, still using several fingers at once, or if you use one finger you can pivot on that finger, making a subtle back-and-forth circular motion with your wrist.
