Anachronism alert. "Alternative" as a music category didn't exist until probably the late '70s. One of the Greatest Alternative Bands, REM, was formed in 1980.

Back in the '60s, this music was called...  "music".

Strange but true.

I love Lou Reed and VU, The Stooges, Syd era Floyd, Can, 13th Flr Elevators, Nick Drake, The Meters, and Brigette Bardot/Serge Gainsbourg. Lots of stuff in there I've heard about but haven't actually listened to yet.

As far as albums that have influenced "alternative" music ever since, there's lots of albums that were probably left out because they were too mainstream to be included on the list. Geez, how many alternative bands were influenced by the Kinks, or the Byrds, or the Doors? Seems like a list made to appease the "I'm too hip for mainstream bands even if my favorite artists were influenced by them" mentality.
