Marshall jcm800

I love the jcm800. I have played one a few times, a friend used to own it.

I'd like one myself, however, they're quite expensive as you know. Does anyone make a clone? Or a kit to build one? Or is there a very similar amp to the jcm800? I remember reading a couple years ago that a Peavey Windsor was pretty ballpark. And on occasion I see one on my local Craigslist.

Any thoughts?

I'm sure this topic has been done to death- but I can't find the search option on this forum (seriously)

the Windsors and AORs (and other cheap alternatives everybody mentions) sound nothing like a JCM800. Sorry. The might have some of the vibe, but each amp is different. If you want a Marshall, save up for a Marshall. They're not that expensive.

I have a JCM 800 2x12 combo, that I purchased new in 1982-83.

I 'm not a fan of the cleans on that amp, but they are workable. Where it shines is when you start turning it up so it gets starts getting gritty and then goes into a creamy distortion.

Mine runs 6550 tubes.

I probably wouldn't spring the money for one these days and there's a lot of nice clones out there.

Give Chuck Dean a call when you are ready. He'll do you a plexi wth a master volume, extra gain if you want it

You pick out the speaks you want.

Even better than the real thing. :D

It will be so nice that you want tp ATA flight case it. :D

Chuck does a couple of Fender style amps too.

Greg Germino, build one hell of a Marshall clone too.

I likes. Charlie Starr from Blackberry Smokes uses Germino amps

I had a sovtek tube midget 50 watt head too. sounded ok. i'd say it would pass as a jcm800 clone. it has enough gain. it sounded good but the sound didn't cut through the mix than much. if i still had it today, i would have the mids boosted or just used an eq pedal to do the job.

yeah mids and treble knobs are your friend where the bass knob is not :)

it is very bass heavy so you better do have your bass knob not beyond 9 o'clock

this amp is a great example that you can't turn knobs to some "defaults", you need to listen to the amp and every knob turn you do to get the result you want. i love the amp and do not need anything else

The {censored} thing is that for what you're going to be paying for an 800 clone, you could just buy the real thing. Keep your eyes peeled on Craigslist, forums, etc.

Ultimately, dropping $1000-1400 for a JCM800 isn't a big thing. They hold their value really well.

My old Sound City head has a sound nearly identical to a Marshall. I'd really like to find myself a 50W Plexi. To me they have the best tone at a reasonable volume. I do own a Valvestate 100 which I run on a 1960 cab. You can pick them up cheap these days. The head does use a preamp tube so its actually pretty decent sounding. The cleans are incredibly nice. As good as any Marshall tube amp I've used. The crunch and lead channels are good too but they are kind of a one trick pony. I prefer to use the clean channel and simply use pedals for my gained tones.
