That's the first time i ever heard John 5 play, he's pretty good but his tone is horrid. Maybe it's just the quality of the video though. That Howie SImon picks with his right arm instead of keeping his wrist loose. I'm trying to get my wrist to stay nice and loose so that my elbow doesn't move at all.

Cant tell if you guys liked what I did there or not but it was fun anyway! danyeo - I have always picked like that from when I started playing...not something I thought about or worked on, it was just what came naturally and comfortably. I have no tendinitis problems either (knock on wood). Here is an unreleased video outtake from my new DVD with Talisman:

Hahahaha, you guys ever hear John 5's clip on his website????

One of my buddies (who happens to be an INCREDIBLE guitarist) told me he thought John 5 was pretty monstrous, and I couldn't help but laugh at him. I thought he was joking, because all I'd seen of John 5 was the Marilyn Manson stuff. Then I heard what he can REALLY do on his site and was like WTF??????????

It's hilarious hearing a guy dressed in Goth clothes playing country chicken-picken stuff!

Definately good stuff Howie, ....

I personally think Alex, Ralphie and a few have that stuff down much faster and cleaner though.

The thing I like about Howies stuff is that he seems to know where and when to play, as does Alex etc.....

I'm jealous....

I should have practiced as a kid....LOL

I have alot of stuff from Howie!! He is a great player for sure!!

I love some of the stuff that he did with Ken Tamplin!! He has more then a few burning solos!

He has definitely played with some killer musicians (Ken Tamplin, Gary Shutt,Jeff Scott Soto)

Hey Howie you tear it up! I think it's some of the best playing I've heard at the forum. I especially love your taste in strats!

Those videos sound like a video game with that harmonizer thing on them. Got any short videos around of you with that killer POD tone?

I'm on dial up : (

The tone on those two videos is a harmonizer. Sounds like a video game/keyboard thing.

At fast speeds it seems impossible to get away from using the arm though. I used to play all from the elbow and have some tendonitis issues. I hear ya on the wrist thing, I use the wrist a lot more now but still the elbow comes in at fast pace.

I see all the shredders use elbow a lot when they put the petal to the metal though. On Petrucci's instructional vid, his forearm is moving so quick it looks like it's vibrating. Yngwie too. His wrist kind've locks up and moves from the elbow. Zakk wylde uses the most elbow I've seen.

One guy who never uses it is E. Johnson. But he doesn't really do linear runs though, like a shredder would. more lateral pentatonic things which the wrist definitely works better for.

Anyhow, I'm trying to work from the wrist more too. There's so much to practice!
