  • Speaker suggestion? (Clean amp content)

I'm in the midst of fixing my buddy's Traynor YGL3 (YBA Mark 3). After cleaning it up, replacing some pots and jack, and doing a retube (and biasing), I noticed that he needs new speakers. The speakers he had in there are some no-name Eminence 12" ones. I did a patch job on the one, but it wont last much longer, and the other one is pooched.

This amp is Traynor's version of the Fender Twin, 2 channels (one normal, one with reverb and tremolo).

Spec's on this amp can be found here: http://www.yorkville.com/products.asp?type=71&cat=46&id=294#ygl3

Specs: (for those who dont go to the link)
    Features
Two channels (I) with dual inputs, vol, treb, mid, bass controls+ bright switch, (II) with dual inputs, vol, treb, mid, bass, reverb, trem. inten. & speed controls plus bright switch. There was also a master volume control. Dual 12" 8 Ohm Eminence speakers.

Although control features were similar to the YSR-2, this was a totally new design with four 6CA7 outputs & 12AX7s in the preamp plus a 6BQ5 for reverb drive. Common user comment, "like a Twin on steroids".

So, I think I'm gonna go with some Warehouse speakers for this bad boy.

My question is would you guys recommend the CL80 clones, or V30 clones? It's an open back design.

Samples of the style of music can be found here: www.myspace.com/geronimonow

I was thinking the CL80's, but I'm open to suggestions.

    thanks,
    scott.

hmmm, tough to say. I havn't used the CL80's yet but V30's are pretty decent for cleans. I hear that CL80's havn't got much character in the clean department. But the CL80's will give you huge headroom if thats what you're after.
Thats all i can say for now.

Always without desire we must be found
If its deep mystery we would sound
But if desire within us be

i think i might do that.

before the amp died, the guy was running it through my Orange 2x12, and he really liked the tone. so maybe the V30 clones? the only problem i see with that is that this is an open back combo.

I have this same amp (earlier pre-'76 silver grill coth version, with Marsland speakers?) and I put in Eminence "Swamp Thangs" and couldn't be happier. It retains amazing low end for a combo while still sounding really balanced across the board. The amp/speaker combo also sounds great with od/distortion pedals. They are recommended for Fender Twins by Eminence themselves & Dave at Avatar Speakers for cleans... then there are those on the dark side using them for high gain death metal as well

I personally wouldn't go with any celestion/clone/British type speaker with this amp, it really needs a clean "American" sounding speaker to complement it I think.

I wouldn't say the CL80's don't have character. I'd say they sparkle and sound full. Plus they have lots of headroom.

Actually, They've had the best clean sound thus far with my Egnater Marshall. And that was even in a closed back cab.

                          do it.

Assuming the Warehouse clones are in fact very similar to the actual Celestions...

...I would go for the CL80's. For me it's all personal preference. I just think the CL80's are better all around speakers than V30's. The have a more balanced sound clean or under gain with a meatier low end than the V30's.
