Its probably just a buffer after the solid state preamp that tries to warm up the signal a bit. If you dont like the sound, you probably just dont like it, and not much you can do about it besides run OD pedals into the clean channel, or get something else. If it made no sound then at least the tube is in the circuit but one preamp tube generally doesn't do all that much. I think the idea with the LED is that people expect the tubes to glow since they kind of look like lightbulbs. In reality especially preamp tubes don't glow much at all.
