Moderators justcrash Posted April 23, 2008 Moderators Share Posted April 23, 2008 My singer prefers to tune down a whoel step. Begrudgingly, I've accepted this, but I don't want a lot of flub and strings hanging off my neck. What gauge strings do you guys have that tune down and can I get the tension similar to what it is in standard E 440?

Members Sandman31774
10-52 i liked when i tuned down a whole step...but a lot of guys like 11's when tuning down a step
Members trey85stang
10-52 here. and 10-46/48 for standard. Im not a big fan of 11's on the treble strings.
Members Dmantis
10- 52 will work fine but it takes time to get used to the heavier strings. Start with 10-46 and see how they work. Fender 250's work very well and sound fantastic.
Members bob the dentist
10-52 i liked when i tuned down a whole step...but a lot of guys like 11's when tuning down a step +1 11's are a little tight, 10-52's are just right but the high strings could be seen as loose by some. Members DeadNight Warrior
As a user of 10-46s in E (and in Eb, although that is starting to get a little too flubby) I'd have to go with 11s.
Members guitar_dude45
I would use a set of 11's. Right now we are on Eb and the 10's are feeling loose.
Members tlbonehead
I use 11-44 for standard and 1/2 step down. So........ I'd go a hair heavier for a full step down, believe it or not.

Members Zeppelin Rules
What scale is the guitar ? On my Gibson scale guitar I found .011s to be a bit slack, especially when playing in drop C so I use .012s now.

We aren't doing it to be heavy or anything, it's just what he is comfortable with. So I am leaning towards 11s? What do you guys think? I would like it to play as close to 440 E as possible. Then yea I'd prolly go with they hybrid 10-52 set if its a Gibson. .011s would definitely feel more slack than you're used to.
Members thenakedarab
At least 11-50 or 12-52 to keep it punchy enough for me.

Huh? Then his top strings are gonna feel slacker. How about 11-52s?

I use 11's for everything from E to D, but for C#-C I need at least 12's, and if it's below open C then 2 gauges up.

I found the difference in the high strings is negligable between .011s and .010s. It was the lower ones that I really found to be too floppy. Those still may be too light though, .12's with a plain G might be more up your alley.

Really? I would think it wouldbe the opposite. I would be creating more slack so the 11's would have more resistance. Am I looking at it wrong?
