How to learn Tube Amp repair?

I have a AS degree in electronics.

I work with electronics every day.

However I'm a half retarded n00b on how tube amps REALLY work.

Are there any books I could buy to teach me?

I don't need fundamentals of electronics, but basic amplifier concepts going into advanced ones would be good.

Any suggestions you guys have would be much appreciated.

The so called "Bible" of tube electronics is The Radiotron Designers Handbook (RCA). 4th Edition. No longer in print but available on eBay most of the time.

Also excellent tube amp reading in print:

Dave Funk's Tube Amp Workbook

By Dave Funk

ISBN 0-9650841-0-8

The Guitar Amp Handbook

By Dave Hunter

ISBN 0-87930-863-X

Specimen Guitars in Chicago teach a tube amp building class. That might be a good place to start. Plus, you;d come out of the class with an amp you built.

I'm totally lost on the point of design. It's easy to replace parts if you have a schematic...but to design an amp from the bottom up totally from scratch or to know how to design mods confuses me.

its not even design or mod design that i care about.

more than anything I'm interested in grabbing up broken amps and flipping them.

learning, trouble shooting, amps, money.

All things I enjoy, thanks for the links fellas.

same here, im an electrical/computer engineer major and while i haven't even started upper division, they cover so much stuff on digital electronics, which is important but you don't learn a thing about tubes becuase its outdated, with the exception of guitar amps

A lot of the guys I know that do amp work, kind of just fell into it. They knew how to not kill themselves. But they just figured {censored} out by themselves.

They pretty much learned by doing. And in this day an age. What you can't figure out, use the internet to try and find out what someone else has.

Not yet, but I plan on it next time I have the $$ laying around.
:)

I'm thinking I'm going to do the set-up/electrical weekend seminar.

I COULD do the 4 week classes, but if I can shove it all into a weekend I just might.

If I can do this without financially straining myself I will.

SOME BUY THE STUFF IN MY SIG!:thu:
