A few months back speaking to a drummer friend (pretty damn good, but completely different style) he also said he didn't understand why everyone went apeshit over Portnoy. The stuff he does sounds fancy, but really isn't anything particularly technical. Aside from the technical side of things, his dynamic sense is woeful, and he overplays on just about everything. I guess the last two points are pretty much current Dream Theater in a nutshell though, so I guess he's doing just fine there. Oh, and he has no sense of tempo.
