Hey, any Vancouver-ites in here? I am going to working in Vancouver and Whistler for the Olympics this February for 5 weeks. The crew housing is "out by the airport". Is the airport far from downtown? Will it suck? Can I get to downtown easily? Obviously a cool town from what I hear. Any standout bars/clubs/music stores etc I should know about?

The one in Richmond is about a 20min -40min drive to downtown depending on traffic. I think its only two buses to get you to downtown. Granville street (once you hit downtown) is ultra cool it goes like this porn/pawn/porn/pawn/drugstore/porn/pawn/hotel/pawn/bar/porn/bar/food/food/food/food/water
There are a few formites that live in Vancouver, i live in Victoria (a ferry trip away). Send me a message when you get in one weekend and I'll take you around. Cheers, Lucius

I'm not completely sure as I haven't taken it myself (no reason to go to Richmond), but the new Canada Line Skytrain route supposedly gets you pretty close to the airport and goes right downtown... public transit will be a {censored}show during the olympics though, I'll be doing all I can to stay the hell away from Vancouver (or at least buses and trains) at that time...

I do not live in Van, but I have spent a lot of time there over the years. Like Lucius said, Granville is pretty rad. The airport that I'm think of is about 30 mins south of Van on the 99. For gear there is a shop on Granville called Tom Lee music, pretty cool store, I bought a guitar there once. Also the Long and Mcquade flagship store is located in Vancouver.

As far as food, there is amazing sushi on almost every single block, and it's cheap as {censored} because there is so much competition. My favorite food in Vancouver is a place Called Foundation, it's located on Main St. and is somewhere between 3rd and 8th (don't remember the exact cross street), they are a Vegetarian restaurant but even if you eat meat the food is really, really good. The nachos can feed a small army.

Check out the Rock shop on Granville (it's on the south end near the porn shops) they have all kinds of band merch, posters, shirts, patches, stickers etc. it's kinda like a cooler Hot Topic that actually focuses on music.

If you have a day off, take the ferry over to Vancouver Island and check out Victoria, it's a really cool town, and the night life there is actually pretty wild. The boat ride over itself is a lot of fun, very cool sights.

Hope that helps.

if you're staying near the airport, that means you're in Richmond. you will think you landed in China. as has been mentioned, Granville St. downtown is where the highest concentration of clubs is. the Commodore, the Venue, the Plaza, Red Room etc.
there's a skytrain that goes from Richmond to downtown Vancouver, takes about 10-15 mins, i believe. that's what you'll want to use.
NJAMS on Main st. is cool for vintage stuff but it's pricey. the used gear shops have kinda disappeared, I think because of craigslist and Ebay. i find insane deals on craigs quite a bit.
pm me if you want, meet up for beers/shows? HCAF Vancouver forumite gathering?

Sounds great fellas. I'm doing camera rigging and tech installs for the Host Broadcaster, so not sure my work schedule each day. Usually it's normal days, 8am til 5pm or so. Once the Games are up and running, it's just crisis management in case anything goes tits up. Im writing down all these suggestions. I'll be with a crew of 85 folks from the UK, Australia and New Zealand as well as the States. I suspect that there could be some drinking going on.
